Anurupa Debi
Anurupa Debi (9 September 1882 – 19 April 1958) (also known as, Anurupa Devi) was one of the most reputed female novelists in Bengali literature in the British Raj, British colonial era. She was also an eminent short story writer, poet as well as a social worker. Debi was one of the first female writers in Bengali literature to gain considerable prominence and popularity. Personal life Anurupa Debi was born on 9 September 1882 to then Deputy Magistrate and writer, Mukunda Mukhopadhyay and Dhorasundari Debi at her maternal uncle's house at Shyambazar, Kolkata, Calcutta (now, Kolkata). Social reformer, Bhudev Mukhopadhyay, Bhudeb Mukhopadhyay was her paternal grandfather. Her maternal grandfather, Nagendranath Bandopadhyay was one of the founder-members of famous ''Bangiya Natyashala''. Debi Prasad Sarkar (born 15 January 1958) is an Indian biochemist, immunologist and virologist. Currently Prof Sarkar has been appointed (from 9th July 2024) as a Guest Professor in the Dept. of Biological Sciences and Engineering, IIT Gandhinagar, Palaj, Gujarat. Before joining IIT Gandhinagar, he worked as a Visiting Professor of Chemistry, Ashoka University, Sonipat, Haryana. He was the head of biochemistry department and dean FIAS, at the University of Delhi South Campus and served as the Director of IISER Mohali from 2017 to 2019. Debi Singh Tewatia ( 30 June 1930 - November, 2017) was a Chief justice of Calcutta High Court and former Advocate General of Punjab and Haryana. Career Tewatia was born in the village of Kondal, Haryana. After completion of study from Lincoln's Inn he started his lawyer career at Gurgaon district Court in 1955. Debi Roy (born 4 August 1940) is one of the founding fathers of the Hungry generation movement in Bengali literature. He is also the first modern Dalit poet in Bengali. He was born in a very poor family and worked as an errand boy in tea stalls of Calcutta when his parents lived in a slum in Howrah. He funded his own education and became a graduate of Calcutta University. He started writing in his childhood. Debi Roy met Malay Roy Choudhury in an office of a literary periodical in 1960 and the two of them, after discussions with Shakti Chattopadhyay and Samir Roychoudhury launched the now famous Hungryalist movement in November 1961.
