Deathrock
Deathrock (or death rock) is a rock music subgenre that merges punk rock and post-punk with Gothic fiction, gothic and glam rock visuals and elements of horror film scores. Often overlapping with, and sometimes considered a subgenre of, gothic rock, the genre was pioneered by bands from the early 1980s Los Angeles punk scene, including Christian Death, Kommunity FK, 45 Grave and the Super Heroines. By the middle of the decade, the genre had begun to interact with the United Kingdom's gothic rock scene, leading to the formation of English deathrock bands like Sex Gang Children and Alien Sex Fiend. However, soon after the genre declined in popularity, and its name largely fell out of use. In the late 1990s, a revival of the genre began, in which groups like Bloody Dead and Sexy, the Phantom Limbs and Tragic Black expanded the scope of the genre to include elements of psychobilly, electronic body music and futurepop. Christian Death
Christian Death is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles County, California, in 1979 by Rozz Williams. With major line-up changes over the years, Christian Death has retained "a relentlessly confrontational stand against organized religion and conventional morality". Williams was eventually joined by guitarist Rikk Agnew of the band Adolescents, James McGearty on bass guitar and George Belanger on drums. This line-up was responsible for producing the band's best known work, their 1982 debut studio album '' Only Theatre of Pain'', which was highly influential in the development of the style of music known as deathrock, as well as on the American gothic scene which also produced bands such as Kommunity FK and 45 Grave. Bloody Dead And Sexy
Bloody Dead and Sexy is a German deathrock band formed in 1997. History The band was founded in 1997 by Rosa Iahn, Tim Schande, Björn Henningson, and Wolfgang Reetz. In 2000, founding member Wolfgang Reetz died in a motorcycle accident and was replaced by guitar player d'hAmm. After some years of touring in Europe and contributing songs to compilations (most well known is the song "Bloody Rose"), Bloody Dead and Sexy signed to the well-known German goth-label Alice In... and released two albums, "Paint It Red" in 2001 and "Narcotic Room" in 2005. In 2004, Bloody Dead and Sexy toured the United States. Their popularity among the followers of the deathrock-scene worldwide became clear, when they were asked to headline the Wave Gotik Treffen, the world's biggest goth-festival in Leipzig, two years in a row (2005 and 2006). Super Heroines
The Super Heroines were an American deathrock trio formed in Los Angeles during the early 1980s. However, unlike other early deathrock bands such as Christian Death and 45 Grave, Super Heroines did not carry on a traditional goth sound, instead a more Punk rock, punk style Heavy metal music, metal inspired by the Runaways. Its original lineup featured Eva O (guitar and vocals), Sandra Ross (bass), and Del Mar Richardson (drums). Other members of the group have included bassists Jill Emery and Edwin Borsheim as well as drummers Steve Darrow, China Figueroa and Cathy Falanga. Both Jill Emery and Eva O went on to play with Rozz Williams (from fellow deathrock band Christian Death) in his next band, Shadow Project, during the 1990s. Eva O also played in Christian Death in the early 1980s and is currently the vocalist for Christian Death 1334, a touring and recording version of Christian Death with the members of the Only Theatre of Pain album. Kommunity FK
Kommunity FK is an American post-punk/gothic rock band which formed in 1978. The band helped establish what came to be known as the deathrock scene in Los Angeles. History The band was formed in 1978 by singer Patrick Mata, who was influenced by musicians Throbbing Gristle, David Bowie and Joy Division as well as other artistic inspirations like Dadaism, anti-art, noise, musique concrète and the Brion Gysin/William Burroughs cut-up technique. Though initially named "Kommunity Fuck", after a piece of paste-up art created by Mata, the moniker was soon shortened. Mata has stated that the name was inspired by rejections from unimaginative local media venue talent buyers and industry powers. Kommunity FK's debut album, ''The Vision and the Voice'', was released in 1983 by Independent Project Records, featuring a lineup of Mata, drummer Matt Chaikin and bassist CE CE. Gothic Rock
Gothic rock (also called goth rock or simply goth) is a style of rock music that emerged from post-punk in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. The first post-punk bands which shifted toward dark music with gothic overtones include Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus (band), Bauhaus, and the Cure. The genre itself was defined as a separate movement from post-punk. Gothic rock stood out due to its darker sound, with the use of primarily minor or bass chords, reverb, dark arrangements, or dramatic and melancholic melodies, having inspirations in gothic literature allied with themes such as sadness, nihilism, dark romanticism, tragedy, melancholy and morbidity. These themes are often approached poetically. The sensibilities of the genre led the lyrics to represent the evil of the century and the romantic idealization of death and the supernatural imagination. Tragic Black
Tragic Black is an American deathrock band formed in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2000 by musicians known as Vision and Vyle. It has incorporated elements of darkwave music into each of its albums. Lyrically, Tragic Black's themes for the songs deal with religion, political issues and spirituality. History Tragic Black most recently released video for "Play For Today", a cover by The Cure. In April 2016, Tragic Black released their latest album "NOSTALGIA" on Danse Macabre Records in Germany. NOSTALGIA was recorded at BASSLAB studio by Steven Comeau (of STARBASS) who recorded/mixed/mastered and did additional programming. Alien Sex Fiend
Alien Sex Fiend are an English gothic rock band, formed in London in 1982. The current lineup of the band consists of Nik Fiend and Mrs Fiend. Five of the group's albums and 12 of their singles reached top 20 positions in the UK indie charts in the period up to 1987. History Alien Sex Fiend were formed by Nicholas Wade (''Nik Fiend''), Christine Wade (Mrs Fiend), David James (Yaxi Highrizer) and John Freshwater (Johnnie Ha Ha) in late 1982 at the Batcave (London nightclub), Batcave club in London (where Nik worked). 45 Grave
45 Grave is an American rock band from Los Angeles formed in 1979. The original group broke up in 1985, but vocalist Dinah Cancer subsequently revived the band. History The band was founded during the punk rock movement by Paul B. Cutler in Los Angeles, California, alongside another band with almost the same lineup called Vox Pop, which produced two singles. 45 Grave's original lineup consisted of Cancer (formerly of Castration Squad) on vocals, Cutler (formerly of the Consumers) on guitar, Rob Graves (also known as Rob Ritter, formerly of the Exterminators, the Bags and the Gun Club) on bass, and Don Bolles (of the Exterminators, the Germs and Nervous Gender) on drums. The name, according to Bolles, derived from a mysterious button Cutler found at a thrift store and gave to Bolles for Christmas that said "WE DIG 45 GRAVE". Punk rock (also known as simply punk) is a rock music genre that emerged in the mid-1970s.
