Death Of Mohamad Daniel Mohamad Nasser
On 23 November 2015, after being severely assaulted by his mother and her boyfriend the day before, Mohamad Daniel Mohamad Nasser, who was a month short of his third birthday, died at his mother's rented flat in Telok Blangah, Telok Blangah Crescent. Daniel sustained about 41 external injuries caused by abuse. Investigations and sources revealed that the couple had often beaten the boy, told him to stand in the living room or kitchen for hours as punishment, and force-fed him dry chilli. This abuse lasted for a month or so before Daniel died from a head injury inflicted by the couple. Daniel's biological mother, 41-year-old Zaidah (who goes by one name), and her 46-year-old boyfriend Zaini Jamari were arrested and put on trial in June 2016 for the fatal abuse of the boy. Caning is a widely used form of corporal punishment in Singapore. It can be divided into several contexts: judicial, prison, reformatory, military, school and domestic. These practices of caning as punishment were introduced during the period of British colonial rule in Singapore. Similar forms of corporal punishment are also used in some other former British colonies, including two of Singapore's neighbouring countries, Malaysia and Brunei. On 2 September 2018, four-year-old Nursabrina Agustiani Abdullah (2014 – 2 September 2018), also known as Sabrina, died from blunt force trauma to the abdomen after her stepfather physically assaulted her by pushing her and kicking her in the stomach twice, which resulted in extensive intra-abdominal bleeding that caused the girl to die a day after the assault, despite her parents' attempt to resuscitate her. Sabrina's stepfather, 25-year-old Muhammad Salihin bin Ismail, was later arrested and charged with murder, a crime that warrants the death penalty in Singapore. 2016 Toa Payoh Child Abuse Case
On 23 October 2016, a five-year-old boy was pronounced dead at a children's hospital in Singapore. He was found to have been a victim of child abuse by his parents Azlin binte Arujunah and Ridzuan bin Mega Abdul Rahman for months leading up to his death. This involved both Azlin and Ridzuan using boiling hot water to scald the boy on several occasions, inflicting severe burns and scald injuries which caused the boy to die in hospital weeks after the first of the four scalding incidents. The couple was later arrested and charged with murder. To protect his surviving siblings' identities and their privacy, the boy was not named in the media. Death Of Mohammad Airyl Amirul Haziq Mohamed Ariff
On 1 August 2014, Singaporean four-year-old Mohammad Airyl Amirul Haziq Mohamed Ariff was hospitalized for severe brain injuries and he died four days later in spite of medical treatment. Airyl's 32-year-old mother Noraidah Mohd Yussof was arrested and charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt, which was upgraded to murder upon the death of her son. It was later revealed that Noraidah had abused her son for two years, starting from March 2012, and on the date of Airyl's hospitalization, Noraidah had beaten Airyl severely for not properly reciting numbers in Malay. This led to severe head injuries that caused the death of the boy. 1999 Ang Mo Kio Child Abuse Case
On 3 June 1999, seven-year-old Andy Ang Wei Jie (洪伟杰 Hóng Wěijíe) collapsed in his home and died due to multiple injuries on his body. Four years later, Ang's mother and her boyfriend were both arrested for murdering him, and it was revealed that the boyfriend, Chong Keng Chye (钟敬财 Zhóng Jìngcái), had ruthlessly and relentlessly tortured the boy from October 1998 until 3 June 1999, when the boy died. The mother was sent to jail for four years and seven years on charges of abetting Chong to abuse her son and unrelated cheating offences, and Chong, who had a long criminal record since 1981, was sentenced to the maximum of 20 years' preventive detention with caning for charges of child abuse and cheating. From March to November 2020, an 11-year-old Singaporean girl, whose name was withheld due to a gag order, was physically abused by her stepfather Mohamad Fazli Selamat and mother Roslinda Jamil inside their Jurong flat. The girl died on 10 November 2020, four days after Fazli used an exercise bar to batter her multiple times on the head, and Roslinda reportedly did not intervene. Annie Ee Yu Lian (余玉莲 Yú Yùlián; – 13 April 2015) was a Singaporean waitress who was abused for eight months before she died on 13 April 2015 at the age of 26. Ee's abusers were her 31-year-old childhood friend, Tan Hui Zhen (陈惠珍 Chén Huìzhēn), and Tan's 38-year-old husband, Pua Hak Chuan (潘学泉 Pān Xuéquán), who were both her flatmates in the couple's four-room Woodlands flat. The cause of death was certified to be acute fat embolism as a result of the beatings Ee received from Tan and Pua.
