Dear God (Midge Ure Song)
"Dear God" is a song by Midge Ure as the single from his album '' Answers to Nothing''. It was his first and only song to reach the U.S. ''Billboard'' Hot 100, where it peaked at number 95. Elsewhere, the song also charted in the Netherlands and the UK. Background In a 2015 interview with Songfacts, Ure said that he conceived the song soon after waking up. He subsequently rushed over to the recording studio located at the bottom of his garden to get these musical ideas on tape. For the song's lyrical content, Ure centered the central theme around the weaponization of religion for acts of violence, saying that he found it both "bizarre" and "obscene" that "staunch radical people will happily kill somebody else because they don't believe in the same God". He further added that the song was "like a child's prayer...It's a question and an explanation at the same time." Midge Ure
James "Midge" Ure (; born 10 October 1953) is a Scottish singer-songwriter and record producer. His stage name, Midge, is a phonetic reversal of Jim. Ure enjoyed particular success in the 1970s and 1980s in bands including Slik, Thin Lizzy, Rich Kids, Visage, and as the second bandleader of Ultravox after John Foxx had left, carrying the band into the high charts positions for the six following years before disbanding it. In 1984, he co-wrote and produced the charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas?" putting together for the occasion the supergroup Band Aid. The single has sold 3.7 million copies in the UK at first release, and has become a staple of Christmas songs compilations ever since. Steve Brzezicki
Steve Brzezicki is a British session bass guitarist and younger brother of drummer Mark Brzezicki with whom he often forms a rhythm section as "The Brzezicki Brothers". Among others, he and Mark worked together on Midge Ure's solo albums '' Answers to Nothing'' (1988) and '' Pure'' (1991), and Nik Kershaw's album ''Radio Musicola'' (1986). They also played live with ex-Marillion singer Fish on his first solo tour in 1989/1990 and Procol Harum in 2000. Steve also features on Scatman John's debut album, '' Scatman's World'' (1995). The Dutch Single Top 100 or Single Top 100 is a Dutch chart, based on official physical single sales, legal downloads and since July 2013 streaming and composed by Dutch Charts. It is one of the three official charts, the other two being the Dutch Top 40 and the Mega Top 30. The difference is that these charts also include airplay data. The list is especially intended for the music industry and those who take an interest in charts. In Dutch TV programmes the ''Single Top 100'' is often cited, although it has not been broadcast since December 2006. Mark Michael Brzezicki ( , ; born 21 June 1957) is an English musician, best known as the former drummer of the Scottish rock band Big Country. He has also played with Procol Harum, Casbah Club, The Cult, and From the Jam. Biography Brzezicki first played on two singles with the band On the Air featuring bass player Tony Butler and Simon Townshend in 1980. Brzezicki quickly developed to become a session drummer and he played on the track " A Little Is Enough" on Pete Townshend's '' Empty Glass'' album from 1980. Brzezicki and Butler, who had formed a session based company 'Rhythm for Hire' shortly joined Big Country and they released their debut album '' The Crossing'' in 1983. Ultravox
Ultravox (earlier styled as Ultravox!) were a British new wave band, formed in London in April 1974 as Tiger Lily. Between 1980 and 1986, they scored seven Top Ten albums and seventeen Top 40 singles in the UK, the most successful of which was their 1981 hit "Vienna". From 1974 until 1979, singer John Foxx was frontman and the main driving force behind Ultravox. Foxx left the band in March 1979 to embark on a solo career. Midge Ure took over as lead singer, guitarist and frontman after he and keyboardist Billy Currie worked on the studio project Visage. Ure revitalised the band and steered it to commercial chart success lasting until 1987, at which time the group disbanded.
