Dean Haspiel
Dean Edmund Haspiel (born May 31, 1967, in New York City) is an American comic book artist, writer, and playwright. He is known for creating Billy Dogma, The Red Hook, and for his collaborations with writer Harvey Pekar on his '' American Splendor'' series as well as the graphic novel ''The Quitter'', and for his collaborations with Jonathan Ames on ''The Alcoholic'' and HBO's '' Bored to Death''. He has been nominated for numerous Eisner Awards, and won a 2010 Emmy Award for TV design work. Asbury Park Comicon
The East Coast Comicon is an annual comic book fan convention that takes place in New Jersey. It began in 2011 as the Asbury Park Comicon, and took place in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Due to its expansion and the need for a larger venue, it was renamed the East Coast Comicon in 2015, and moved to the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, New Jersey. History The Asbury Park Comicon was founded by Cliff Galbraith of Crucial Entertainment, LLC. The show was conceived when Galbraith attended and observed crowds of people looking through cardboard boxes filled with albums. Galbraith relates, "I said, 'Who else looks through white boxes?' And a light bulb went off." Comparing his convention to the enormous crowds of the much larger New York Comic Con, which takes place in nearby Manhattan, Galbraith comments, "What we offer is a much more civilized, intimate setting. Upstart Associates
Upstart Associates, sometimes known as Upstart Studios, was the name of an artists' studio at 231 West 29th Street in New York City formed in late 1978 by four comic book creators. Those artists were Howard Chaykin, Walt Simonson, Val Mayerik, and Jim Starlin. The membership of the studio changed over time, eventually adding James Sherman, Frank Miller, and Gary Hallgren as previous members left. (There were never more than four studio members at any one time.) In addition, future comics professionals Peter Kuper and Dean Haspiel worked as assistants at Upstart before they began doing professional work. Some of the most notable comics of the early 1980s were produced at Upstart, including Chaykin's '' American Flagg!'', Simonson's run on ''Thor'', and Miller's run on '' Daredevil''. Popgun (comics)
''Popgun'' is a comics anthology series created by Mark Andrew Smith and Joe Keatinge. It was published by American company Image Comics in four volumes, between 2007 and 2010. The driving concept behind ''Popgun'' was a mixtape of graphic short stories that cross the borders of all genres. No theme was given to contributors and instead emphasis is placed on diversity of content and the mixing/track order of each volume. ''Popgun'' featured many well-known creators as well as showcased brand-new talent who were not widely known at the time. Many creators debuting in ''Popgun'' have since made their mark on the comics industry. ''Popgun'' twice won the Harvey Award for best anthology, and won the Eisner Award for Best Anthology in 2010. Alternative Comics (publisher)
Alternative comics or independent comics cover a range of American comics that have appeared since the 1980s, following the underground comix movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Alternative comics present an alternative to mainstream superhero comics which in the past have dominated the American comic book industry. They span across a wide range of genres, artistic styles, and subjects. Alternative comics are often published in small numbers with less regard for regular distribution schedules.
