Dead Outlaw
''Dead Outlaw'' is a musical with music and lyrics by David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna and a book by Itamar Moses. It is inspired by the life of Elmer McCurdy. It premiered in 2024 at the Minetta Lane Theatre. The musical was originally conceived by Yazbek. It opened on Broadway at the Longacre Theatre on April 27, 2025. Plot summary Elmer McCurdy, a wayward boy born late in the 19th century, allows a middle-class life with a girl to slip away. Instead, McCurdy enlists in the army and ends up in a life (or rather, a death) of crime: McCurdy's shot dead at the age of 31. McCurdy's body is left unclaimed, so the coroner uses the body and begins to charge spectators 25 cents to see who he brands 'the dead outlaw.' His corpse travels the country, ending up in wax museums, movies, and even an amusement park ride. Finally, years later, a movie set dresser discovers the body, acknowledging McCurdy's humanity, and sends it to a coroner who identifies the body. Production history ...

David Yazbek
David Norman Yazbek (born 1961) is an American writer, musician, composer, and lyricist. He wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway musicals ''The Full Monty'' (2000), '' Dirty Rotten Scoundrels'' (2004), '' Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown'' (2010), ''The Band's Visit'' (2017), ''Tootsie'' (2019), and '' Dead Outlaw'' (2025). He won a Tony Award and a Grammy Award for ''The Band's Visit''. He also consulted on the musical '' Buena Vista Social Club''. Early life David Yazbek was born in New York City. His father is of Lebanese descent, and his mother was of half-Italian and half-Jewish ancestry. He began cello lessons in elementary school and took up the piano as a teenager. He attended Riverdale Country School. While attending Brown University as an undergraduate, he wrote an original musical with the production group Brownbrokers before graduating in 1982. Dwain Esper
Dwain Atkins Esper (October 7, 1894 – October 18, 1982) was an American director and producer of exploitation films. Biography Esper who was born in Snohomish, Washington was a veteran of World War I and worked as a building contractor before switching to the film business in the mid-1920s. He produced and directed inexpensive pictures including ''Maniac (1934 film), Sex Maniac'', ''Marihuana (1936 film), Marihuana'', and ''How to Undress in Front of Your Husband''. To enhance the appeal of these low-budget features, he included scenes containing gratuitous nudity and violence that led some to label him the "father of modern exploitation." Esper's wife, Hildagarde Stadie, wrote many of the scripts for his films. Andrew Hartley Payne (November 17, 1907 – December 3, 1977) was the winner of the International Trans-Continental Footrace in 1928. He ran the route from Los Angeles to New York City, much of it along U.S. Route 66, in 573 hours, 4 minutes, 34 seconds, (23 days) averaging over an 84-day staged run. Payne, a member of the Cherokee Nation, grew up in Foyil, Oklahoma which was one of the check point towns along the route of the race. His father, Doc, was a friend of Will Rogers and had worked on the ranch of the latter's family during his youth. The footrace was organized to promote U.S. Route 66 which had recently been built as a simple, well-paved route across the country, and dubbed "the main street of America".
