José María De La Cruz
General José María de la Cruz Prieto (Concepcion, Chile, Concepción, March 25, 1799 – November 23, 1875) was a Chilean soldier. The son of Luis de la Cruz (politician), Luis de la Cruz and of Josefa Prieto Sotomayor, and was a cousin of future presidents José Joaquín Prieto and Manuel Bulnes. He joined the Army on October 27, 1811, and participated actively in the battles of Battle of Chacabuco, Chacabuco, Battle of Maipu, Maipu and Pangal during the Chilean War of Independence. He married Josefa Zañartu Trujillo, and had a single daughter: Delfina de la Cruz, Delfina de la Cruz Zañartu who in turn was the wife of future president Aníbal Pinto. During the War of the Confederation, he was the under-commandant-in-chief of the Restoration Army, under General Manuel Bulnes, having special participation in the victory of Battle of Yungay, Yungay. According to Christian tradition, the True Cross is the real cross on which Jesus of Nazareth was crucified. It is related by numerous historical accounts and legends that Helen, the mother of Roman emperor Constantine the Great, recovered the True Cross at the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, when she travelled to the Holy Land in the years 326–328. Tomás de la Cruz Rivero (September 18, 1911 – September 6, 1958) was a Major League Baseball pitcher who played for the Cincinnati Reds in 1944. The 32-year-old rookie was a native of Marianao, Cuba; he played from 1934 to 1947 in the winter Cuban League and from 1945 to 1948 in the Mexican League. In 1960, he was elected to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame. Playing career De la Cruz is one of many ballplayers who only appeared in the major leagues during World War II.
