Dayton Historic District is a national historic district located at Dayton, Rockingham County, Virginia, USA. The district encompasses 154 contributing buildings and one contributing site in the central business district and surrounding residential areas of the town of Dayton. It includes a variety of residential, commercial, and institutional buildings most of which date from the late-19th century and early-20th century. Notable buildings include the Alberta Coffman House, Layman House, the Samuel Shrum House, the Thomas House, W.J. Dayton, Virginia
Dayton is a town in Rockingham County, Virginia, United States. The population is 1,530 as of the 2010 census. It is included in the Harrisonburg, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Dayton is located at (38.416323, -78.939440). The town is approximately two miles southwest of Harrisonburg and two miles northeast of Bridgewater. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.1 km2), all of it land. History The town of Dayton is one of the oldest settled communities in Rockingham County, and is the county's second oldest incorporated town, after Bridgewater. The first settler in Dayton was Daniel Harrison (c. 1702-1770), whose family settled along Cooks Creek, north of downtown. Rockingham County is a county located in the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 83,757. Its county seat is the independent city of Harrisonburg. Along with Harrisonburg, Rockingham County forms the Harrisonburg, VA, Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is also home of the Rockingham County Baseball League. History Settlement of the county began in 1727, when Adam Miller (Mueller) staked out a claim on the south fork of the Shenandoah River, near the line that now divides Rockingham County from Page County.
