Deir ez-Zor () is the largest city in eastern Syria and the List of cities in Syria, seventh largest in the country. Located on the banks of the Euphrates to the northeast of the capital Damascus, Deir ez-Zor is the capital of the Deir ez-Zor Governorate. In the 2018 census, it had a population of 271,800. Etymology Ad-Deir is a common shorthand for Deir ez-Zor. In the Syriac language, Syriac language of the Assyrian people, Assyrian Christian population, Zeʿūrtaܙܥܘܪܬܐ means "little"; hence, ''Dīrā Zeʿūrta'' means "small habitation". The current name, which has been extended to the surrounding region, indicates an ancient site for one of the Early Christianity, Early Christian secluded Syriac monasteries established during the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire and Apostolic Age throughout Mesopotamia. The country of Syria is Administrative division, administratively subdivided into Governorates of Syria, 14 governorates, which are sub-divided into Districts of Syria, 65 districts, which are further divided into 284 sub-districts. Each of the governorates and districts has its own centre or capital city, except for Rif Dimashq Governorate and Markaz Rif Dimashq district. All the sub-districts have their own centres as well.
