Daylighting (architecture)
Daylighting is the practice of placing windows, skylights, other openings, and Reflective surfaces (climate engineering), reflective surfaces so that direct or indirect sunlight can provide effective internal lighting. Particular attention is given to daylighting while designing a building when the aim is to maximize visual comfort or to reduce energy use. Energy savings can be achieved from the reduced use of artificial (electric) lighting or from passive solar heating. Artificial lighting energy use can be reduced by simply installing fewer electric lights where daylight is present or by automatically Dimmer, dimming or switching off electric lights in response to the presence of daylighta process known as daylight harvesting. The amount of daylight received in an internal space can be analyzed by measuring illuminance on a grid or undertaking a daylight factor calculation. Computer programs such as Radiance (software), Radiance allow an architect or engineer to quickly calculat ... Daylighting (streams)
Daylighting is the opening up and restoration of a previously buried watercourse, one which had at some point been diverted below ground. Typically, the rationale behind returning the riparian environment of a stream, wash, or river to a more natural above-ground state is to reduce runoff, create habitat for species in need of it, or improve an area's aesthetics. In the United Kingdom, the practice is also known as deculverting. In addition to its use in urban design and urban planning, planning the term also refers to the public process of advancing such projects. According to the Planning and Development Department of the City of Berkeley, "A general consensus has developed that protecting and restoring natural creeks' functions is achievable over time in an urban environment while recognizing the importance of property rights." Daylighting (intersections)
Intersection daylighting, or simply daylighting, is an urban design strategy to enhance safety at intersections by improving visibility. About 40-60% of pedestrian and cyclist injuries occur at intersections. Daylighting reduces collisions by removing obstructions that prevent drivers from seeing other cars, pedestrians, bicyclists, and other road users. The National Association of City Transportation Officials recommends daylighting by preventing cars from parking within of an intersection. If parking is merely disallowed by law or signage, drivers may not always comply, so it is best to replace parking with curb extensions or other physical infrastructure that do not impede visibility, like planters, granite blocks, or bike share stations. Many jurisdictions, such as New York State (excluding New York City) and Pennsylvania disallow parking near all intersections. In such cases, further daylighting typically involves safety improvements that encourage compliance with exist ... Daylighting (tunnels)
Daylighting a tunnel is to remove its "roof" of overlying rock and soil, exposing the railway or roadway to daylight and converting it to a railway or roadway Cut (earthmoving), cut. Tunnels are often daylighted to improve vertical or horizontal clearances—for example, to accommodate Double-stack rail transport, double-stack container trains or electrifying rail lines, where increasing the size of the tunnel bore is impractical. List of daylighted tunnels * Australia ** The Moocomonga Tunnel carried the Central Western railway line, Queensland, Central Western railway line through the Gogango Range in Queensland, Australia (). It opened in 1876. The tunnel was daylighted in 1983 due to rock falls which blocked the tunnel from time to time. ** The Coromandel and Pinera Tunnel, Pinera Tunnels on the Belair line in Adelaide, South Australia, both built as a single track tunnel with the line in 1883, were daylighted in the 1920s when the line to Belair, South Australia, Belair wa ...
