David Whitaker (artist)
David Whitaker (8 June 1938 – 15 March 2007) was a British abstract artist and art teacher. Early life and education Whitaker was born in Blackpool, Lancashire. He studied at the Blackpool and the Fylde School of Art for 6 years from the age of 13 and moved to London in the late 1950s, where he began working as a graphic designer. He did not enjoy the work, and left to become a milkman instead. The early hours suited him: his job finished early, and he could spend the rest of the day painting. He married fellow artist Frances Wood in 1959, and studied as a mature student at the Royal Academy Schools from 1962 to 1966. Later career and recognition Whitaker was one of the first artists to have a sholo show at the Serpentine Gallery when it opened in London in 1970. He won the Mark Rothko Memorial Award in 1973 at the recommendation of Bridget Riley, which allowed him to work in the U.S. for several months. David Arthur Whitaker (18 April 1928 – 4 February 1980) was an English television writer and novelist who worked on the early years of the science-fiction TV series ''Doctor Who''. He served as the programme's first story editor, supervising the writing of its first 51 episodes from 1963 to 1964. Career Prior to joining the BBC, Whitaker worked as a writer, actor and director with the York Repertory Group. A play he wrote for them, ''A Choice of Partners'' (1957), gained the attention of the BBC's script department. They commissioned Whitaker to work on the series '' Garry Halliday'' and the soap opera ''Compact''. Whitaker was employed as the original story editor for ''Doctor Who'', being appointed on or around 24 June 1963. He had not planned to stay longer than a year in the position, as he thought the series might not be renewed. He had therefore agreed to take up a role working on another production. David Sinclair Whitaker (6 January 1931 – 11 January 2012) was an English composer, songwriter, arranger, and conductor who was most active in the 1960s and 1970s. Musical works Whitaker, who was born in Kingston upon Thames, collaborated with many prestigious British and French artists including Air, Etienne Daho, Marianne Faithfull, Claude François, Serge Gainsbourg, France Gall, Johnny Hallyday, the Rolling Stones, Jimmy Page (for the soundtrack to ''Death Wish II''), Saint Etienne, Simply Red and Sylvie Vartan, and other international artists including Lee Hazlewood, Kings of Convenience and Francesco De Gregori. David Haddon Whitaker (died 4 August 2021) was a British book publisher. A direct descendant of Joseph Whitaker, he joined the family firm, J. Whitaker & Sons, in 1956. Whitaker became involved with the development of Standard Book Numbers, the precursor to the ISBN, in the 1960s. Whitaker's firm was well placed to drive the standard as it published records of all books published in the United Kingdom. The SBN was expanded internationally from 1968 and Whitaker, who is sometimes known as "the father of the ISBN", played a key role in this. He chaired the first International Organization for Standardization (ISO) working group on the ISBN and helped draft ISO standard 2108. Whitaker served as editor of trade magazine ''The Bookseller'' from 1977 to 1979. In this role he favoured stories on women in the industry, to encourage them in what was a male-dominated workplace. David Jeffrey Whitaker (born April 8, 1961) is an American attorney and politician serving as a member of the Arkansas House of Representatives for the 85th district. Whitaker was a candidate for Arkansas's 3rd congressional district in the 2010 election. Early life and education Raised in Georgia, Whitaker graduated from Granby High School in Norfolk, Virginia. Whitaker earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in geography from University of Mary Washington and a Juris Doctor from the University of Arkansas School of Law. Career He served in the United States Air Force from 1983 to 1989 reaching the rank of staff sergeant. While in the Air Force he served aboard the USNS ''Observation Island'' (T-AGM-23). In 1992 he was an editorial research intern with the book division of the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C.
