David W. Preus
David Walter Preus (May 28, 1922 – July 23, 2021) was an American Lutheran minister. He served as the last president/presiding bishop of the American Lutheran Church (ALC) from 1973 until that body merged into the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in 1988. Birth and early life Preus was born on May 28, 1922, in Madison, Wisconsin. He grew up in Decorah, Iowa, where his father was a pastor and professor at Luther College. His mother was a musician. He attended college at Luther College, graduating in 1943. After college he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the U.S. Army Signal Intelligence until 1946. He learned Japanese during duty in the Philippines and in Japan. After his military service, Preus enrolled in the University of Minnesota Law School for a year. Christian Keyser Preus (October 13, 1852 – May 28, 1921) was an American Lutheran minister who served as the second president of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Robert David Preus (October 16, 1924 – November 4, 1995) was an American Lutheran pastor, professor, author, and seminary president. Biography Robert Preus was born to Minnesota Governor J.A.O. Preus and Idella Haugen Preus. His older brother is J.A.O. Preus II, former president of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS). Preus graduated from Luther College (Iowa), Luther College with a B.A. degree and thereafter entered Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, where his uncle Herman Preus served as a professor. Preus found Luther Seminary, which was the seminary of the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America (NLCA), to be theologically compromising and indifferent, so he left to attend the newly formed Bethany Lutheran Theological Seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS) in Mankato, Minnesota. Herman Amberg Preus
Herman Amberg Preus (June 16, 1825 – July 2, 1894) was an American Lutheran clergyman and church leader. Ordained in 1848, he became a key figure in organizing the Norwegian Synod. Background Herman Amberg Preus was born in Kristiansand, Norway. He was the son of Paul Arctander Preus, headmaster at the Cathedral School in Kristiansand and Anne Keyser, whose father was Johan Keyser, the Bishop of Kristiansand in the Church of Norway. Herman attended the Cathedral School in Kristiansand. He was educated in theology, graduating from the University of Oslo in Oslo in 1848. Laporte ( ) is a city in Hubbard County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 134 at the 2020 census. History The city of Laporte was founded in 1901 and incorporated as a city in 1908. The city had a period of prosperity where it had a train depot, a hotel (which was torn down to make a filling station), a bank (which was subject to an explosion in the 1930s), and a pickle factory (which burned down in the first half of the 20th century). Lutheran World Federation
The Lutheran World Federation (LWF; ) is a global Communion (religion), communion of national and regional Lutheran denominations headquartered in the Ecumenical Centre in Geneva, Switzerland.
