David S. Cunningham Jr.
David Surmier Cunningham Jr. (June 24, 1935 – November 15, 2017) was a business executive who was elected to the Los Angeles City Council to replace Tom Bradley, who had been elected mayor that year. He represented the 10th district until 1987, when he resigned. Biography Cunningham was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Eula Mae Lawson Cunningham and David S. Cunningham Sr. He received an associate degree from Stowe Teachers College in St. Louis, Missouri, and was in the U.S. Air Force as a cartographer until 1960. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science and economics from the University of California, Riverside, in 1962; the following year he did an internship with the Coro Foundation internship program in Public Affairs after which he served as Administrative Aide to Assemblyman Charles Warren while attending Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. Water fluoridation is the controlled addition of fluoride to public water supplies to reduce tooth decay. Fluoridated water maintains fluoride levels effective for cavity prevention, achieved naturally or through supplementation. In the mouth, fluoride slows tooth enamel demineralization and enhances remineralization in early-stage cavities. Defluoridation is necessary when natural fluoride exceeds recommended limits. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends fluoride levels of 0.5–1.5 mg/L, depending on climate and other factors. In the U.S., the recommended level has been 0.7 mg/L since 2015, lowered from 1.2 mg/L. Bottled water often has unknown fluoride levels. Tooth decay affects 60–90% of schoolchildren worldwide. Lloyd Eugene Rigler (May 3, 1915December 7, 2003) was an American businessman and philanthropist. Rigler and his partner Lawrence E. Deutsch made Adolph's Meat Tenderizer a national brand. His most notable philanthropic effort was the 1994 establishment of the Classic Arts Showcase, a free, non-commercial television channel promoting the performing arts, film, and fine art. Early life and education Rigler was born in Lehr, North Dakota, to Frank and Jeannette Rigler, who ran a general store serving the farming community in the town of Wishek, North Dakota, where the family lived.
