David Ross Sumstine
David Ross Sumstine (January 21, 1870 – April 17, 1965) was an American educator and mycologist. Life and career Born in Somerset, Pennsylvania, Sumstine received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1890 from Thiel College, in Greenville, Pennsylvania. He would receive an honorary Doctor of Pedagogy degree from this institution 41 years later in 1931. The University of Pittsburgh awarded him a Master of Science degree in 1908, and Gettysburg College a Doctor of Science degree in 1910. He became an ordained Lutheran minister in 1900 after having attended seminaries in Chicago and Pittsburgh. In 1891, Sumstine started his teaching career in a one-room school at Youngstown, Pennsylvania. He later became principals of various schools in the area. After moving to Pittsburgh in 1908 and serving as the director of the Osceola branch of Central High School, he became the principal of Peabody High School in 1911, a position he held until 1926. Somerset is a borough in and the county seat of Somerset County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,046 at the 2020 census. The borough is surrounded by Somerset Township. Somerset is just off Exit 110 of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-70 and I-76). Hyphomycetes are a form classification of fungi, part of what has often been referred to as fungi imperfecti, Deuteromycota, or anamorphic fungi. Hyphomycetes lack closed fruit bodies, and are often referred to as moulds (or molds). Most hyphomycetes are now assigned to the Ascomycota, on the basis of genetic connections made by life-cycle studies or by phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences; many remain unassigned phylogenetically. Although no longer considered a phylogenetically defined taxon, the prevalence of hyphomycete forms in nature, the built environment, and laboratories means that identification of members this group remains of practical importance. ''Psathyrella'' is a large genus of about 400 species, and is similar to the genera ''Coprinellus'', ''Coprinopsis'', ''Coprinus'' and ''Panaeolus'', usually with a thin cap and white or yellowish white hollow stem. The caps do not self digest as do those of ''Coprinellus'' and ''Coprinopsis''. Some also have brown spores rather than black. These fungi are often drab-colored, difficult to identify, and all members are considered inedible or worthless (for eating) and so they are often overlooked. However they are quite common and can occur at times when there are few other mushrooms to be seen. The first report of a gilled mushroom fruiting underwater is ''Psathyrella aquatica''.
