David Rogers (musician)
David Rogers also known as David "Feet" Rogers (February 14, 1935 – October 7, 1983) was a Hawaiian lap steel guitarist. He is known for his unique style and significant contributions to traditional Hawaiian music. He was inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame in 2019. Early life Rogers was born in Kalihi, a neighborhood on the island of Oʻahu, and grew up surrounded by music. His father, George "Pops" Rogers, was a Hawaiian steel guitarist, and his uncle, Benny Rogers, played steel guitar for Genoa Keawe. Rogers studied under David Keli'i, the steel guitarist for the Hawaii Calls radio program. He favored a D major tuning passed down through his family, which he viewed as a cultural inheritance to be carefully preserved. Lap Steel Guitar
The lap steel guitar, also known as a Hawaiian guitar or lap slide guitar, is a type of steel guitar without pedals that is typically played with the instrument in a horizontal position across the performer's lap. Unlike the usual manner of playing a traditional acoustic guitar, in which the performer's fingertips press the strings against frets, the pitch of a steel guitar is changed by pressing a polished steel bar against strings while plucking them with the opposite hand. The steel guitar's name is derived from this steel bar. Though the instrument does not have frets, it displays markers that resemble them. Lap steels may differ markedly from one another in external appearance, depending on whether they are acoustic or electric, but in either case, do not have pedals, distinguishing them from pedal steel guitars. Alfred Apaka
Alfred Aholo Apaka, Jr. (March 19, 1919 – January 30, 1960) was a Hawaiian singer whose romantic baritone voice was closely identified with Hawaii between the late 1940s and the early 1960s. Alfred Apaka was arguably the foremost interpreter of Hapa haole music, which melded Hawaiian music with traditional pop arrangements and English lyrics to convey Polynesian imagery and themes. Early life and education Alfred Apaka was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to vocalist Alfred Aholo Apaka, Sr. He was of Chinese, Portuguese, and Hawaiian ancestry. Pua Almeida
Pua Almeida (1922–1974) was a Hawaiian steel guitarist, considered a leading performer on that instrument. Almeida (sometimes given as "Alameida") was born in 1922 in Honolulu. His musical start began in the band of his father, John Kameaaloha Almeida. He formed his own big band, "The Sunset Serenaders" and performed at several top venues around Hawaii. He relocated to Southern California in 1947, performing in clubs. As the Hawaiian steel guitar achieved international status in the 1940s, Almeida was recognized as a master of the instrument. In 1958 he began a 16-year association with the Surfrider Hotel. Sol Hoʻopiʻi
Solomon Hoʻopiʻi Kaʻaiʻai ( ; 1902 – November 16, 1953) was a Native Hawaiian lap steel guitarist. A virtuoso, he was one of the most famous original Hawaiian steel guitarists, along with Joseph Kekuku, Frank Ferera, Sam Ku West and "King" Bennie Nawahi. Early life He was born Solomon Hoʻopiʻi Kaʻaiʻai in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1902 into a large family – his birth making him the 21st child in the family. Sol's family taught him to sing and play instruments by the time he could walk. He was playing the ukulele by age three. Jerry Byrd
Gerald Lester Byrd (March 9, 1920 – April 11, 2005) was an American musician who played the lap steel guitar in country and Hawaiian music, as well as a singer-songwriter and the head of a music publishing firm. He appeared on numerous radio programs. Career Byrd was born in Lima, Ohio, United States, one of five siblings, his interest in the instrument began after a "tent show" when he was 12 and by 15 he was playing in bars. Although his initial interest was Hawaiian music much of his work was country. In 1944/1945 he joined the Grand Ole Opry. Jules Ah See
Jules Keliikuihonua Ah See (June 19, 1924 – June 12, 1960) was an American steel guitarist and comedian. He was born in Lahaina, Maui. At the age of two, he would creep out of his bed at night, in order to listen to the adults playing music. His musical career began with Johnny Almeida, when Jules was in his early teenage years. Among those he played for and with are Pua Almeida, Alfred Apaka and Benny Kalama. He was regularly featured as a steel guitarist on the Hawaii Calls radio program. His performances included imitations of bird and animal sounds created from his guitar, as well as imitating other players such as Sol Hoʻopiʻi and Andy Iona. He is particularly known for his recording of "No Huhu". Considered a role model and one of the best by fellow Hawaiian steel guitarists, he died at age 35 in 1960. Kalihi
Kalihi is a neighborhood of Honolulu on the island of Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi, United States. Split by Likelike Highway (Route 63), it is flanked by Liliha, Chinatown, and Downtown Honolulu to the east and Mapunapuna, Moanalua, and Salt Lake to the west. Kalihi is the name of the '' ahupuaʻa'' (ancient land division) between Kahauiki and Kapālama in the Kona (now Honolulu) district of Oʻahu. The ahupuaʻa consists of Kalihi Uka, Kalihi Waena, and Kalihi Kai. Historically, Kalihi Kai was the site of the former Leprosy Receiving Station, where those suspected of leprosy were examined prior to treatment or being sent to Kalaupapa on the island of Molokaʻi. Wilfred Nalani "Moe" Keale (December 3, 1939 – April 15, 2002) was an American musician of Hawaiian music, a ʻukulele virtuoso, and an actor. He was the uncle and major musical influence of Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. He died from a heart attack on 15 April 2002, aged 62. Early life He was one of the few persons born in the 20th century to have full Hawaiian ancestry. His father was a kahuna. Moe Keale was born on the island of Niʻihau, but raised on Oʻahu.
