David Moore (biologist)
David Dudley Moore (born August 21, 1952) is an American molecular biologist known for his work investigating nuclear hormone receptors. He is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Nutritional Sciences & Toxicology at the University of California, Berkeley. He was a founding editor for the Current Protocols series of laboratory manuals in 1987. Moore has been a leading figure in the investigation of nuclear hormone receptors, having initially discovered and described many family members. Some of his most significant discoveries are the constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) in 1994, farnesoid X receptor (FXR) in 1995, and the small heterodimer partner (SHP) in 1996. In 2019 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Lambda phage (coliphage λ, scientific name ''Lambdavirus lambda'') is a bacterial virus, or bacteriophage, that infects the bacterial species ''Escherichia coli'' (''E. coli''). It was discovered by Esther Lederberg in 1950. The wild type of this virus has a Temperate (virology), temperate life cycle that allows it to either reside within the genome of its host through lysogeny or enter into a lytic phase, during which it kills and lyses the cell to produce offspring. In the field of molecular biology, nuclear receptors are a class of proteins responsible for sensing steroids, thyroid hormones, vitamins, and certain other molecules. Adolf Windaus
Adolf Otto Reinhold Windaus (; 25 December 1876 – 9 June 1959) was a German chemist who won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1928 for his work on sterols and their relation to vitamins. He was the doctoral advisor of Adolf Butenandt who also won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1939. Biography He was born in Berlin, Germany on 25 December 1876 to a family who owned a drapery business. He attended a prestigious French grammar school, where he focused primarily on literature.
