David Mercer (footballer, Born 1893)
David William Mercer (20 March 1893 – 1 June 1950) was an English professional footballer who made over 220 appearances in the Football League for Sheffield United as an outside right. He also played league football for Hull City and Torquay United and won two caps for England. Club career After beginning his career in non-League football with Prescot Athletic, St Helens Town and Skelmersdale United, Mercer joined Second Division club Hull City for a £40 fee on 22 January 1914. He made 91 league appearances and scored 26 goals for the club before moving to First Division Sheffield United on 13 December 1920, for a British record transfer fee of £4,500. He made 241 appearances and scored 22 goals for the Bramall Lane club and won the 1924–25 FA Cup, before leaving in 1928. David Mercer (playwright)
David Mercer (27 June 1928 – 8 August 1980) was an English dramatist. Born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, he worked as a laboratory technician and in the Merchant Navy before attending university. After studying chemistry, he switched to art but eventually turned to writing. His television work for the BBC was often made in collaboration with director Don Taylor. His first stage play, ''Ride a Cock Horse'', starred Peter O'Toole. The Royal Shakespeare Company premiered many of his works, and Mercer wrote the screenplay for the Alain Resnais film ''Providence'', which won a César Award. A long-term heavy drinker, Mercer died in 1980 after suffering a heart attack in Haifa, Israel. David Henry Mercer (July 9, 1857 – January 10, 1919) was an American Republican Party politician. Born in Benton County, Iowa on July 9, 1857, he moved with his parents to Adams County, Illinois in 1858. After the American Civil War he moved again to Brownville, Nebraska. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1880 and the law department of University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1882. He was admitted to the bar and set up practice back in Brownville serving one term as city clerk and police judge. He moved to Omaha, Nebraska in 1885 and was for several years was chairman of the Republican city and county committees. He was the secretary of the Republican State central committee in 1896 and elected secretary of the Republican National Congressional Committee in the same year. David Mercer (15 April 1950 26 August 2020) was a Welsh television sports commentator and presenter, most associated with tennis after his previous career as an umpire in the sport, taking charge of the 1984 Wimbledon men's singles final. Early life and legal career Mercer was born in Swansea and educated at Dynevor School, at the time a state grammar school known as Dynevor Secondary Grammar School. He went on to the University of Nottingham. He played most sports at school and university, and won the Welsh junior doubles at tennis in 1968. David Mercer (born 21 August 1949) is a British former racing driver. Mercer began his racing career in Sportscars in 1977 competing in Group 5/6 . He drove part-time in the FIA World Endurance Championship and Thundersports races from 1982 to 1989. He made one nterseriestart in 1992 and made 11 British Formula 3000/Two starts from 1992 to 1994, finishing 13th in the championship those two years.
