David McCorkell
David William McCorkell (born 26 February 1955) is a British businessman and Lord Lieutenant of County Antrim, the third successive generation of the McCorkell family to be appointed as one of Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenants. Early life McCorkell is the second son of Colonel Sir Michael McCorkell KCVO OBE CStJ TD JP and Lady McCorkell OBE, daughter of Lieut Colonel E. B. Booth, DSO, of Darver Castle, Dundalk, County Louth. McCorkell was born in Derry before being educated in England at Charterhouse. Career Having previously farmed and worked for the family business, Wm McCorkell & Co Ltd, who operated the McCorkell Line from 1778. McCorkell changed career and moved into investment management, joining Bell Lawrie White, which was bought by Brewin Dolphin in 1993. The Order of St John, short for Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem (french: l'ordre très vénérable de l'Hôpital de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem) and also known as St John International, is a British royal order of chivalry constituted in 1888 by royal charter from Queen Victoria and dedicated to St John the Baptist. The Royal Victorian Order (french: Ordre royal de Victoria) is a dynastic order of knighthood established in 1896 by Queen Victoria. Dudley McCorkell
Sir Dudley Evelyn Bruce McCorkell, MBE, KStJ, JP, DL, (22 February 1883 – 30 May 1960) was a Mayor of Derry (1929–35), Lord Lieutenant of County Londonderry (1957–60) and ''ex officio'' member of the Senate of Northern Ireland. Career McCorkell was educated at Shrewsbury School and Pembroke College, Cambridge University, where he won a blue for hockey; playing for two seasons. At the outbreak of World War I, McCorkell offered himself for active service but his offer was declined on medical grounds. He devoted his time to the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John where he served as Director for Derry and County Donegal during the war. The Turf Club was the regulatory body for horse racing in Ireland until 31 December 2017. History The origin of the Turf Club was a regulatory body known as ''the Society of Sportsmen'', which became ''The Jockey Club'' by 1755, before taking on its present name of the ''Turf Club'' in 1784. Despite being independent of the English Jockey Club, it did on occasion referred disputes to that organisation. Down Royal
Down Royal Racecourse is a horse racing venue near Lisburn in Northern Ireland. The most valuable race run there is the Ladbrokes Champion Chase, run at the Northern Ireland Festival of racing in November. The most valuable flat race to be run there annually is the Ulster Derby. Racing has been taking place on the current course, at Maze near Lisburn, since, the early 18th Century on land donated by Arthur Hill, 1st Marquess of Downshire, but the history of Down Royal goes further back to 1685 when King James II issued a Royal Charter and formed the Down Royal Corporation of Horse Breeders. McCorkell Line
The McCorkell Line was a shipping line operated by ''Wm. McCorkell & Co. Ltd.'' from 1778, principally carrying passengers from Ireland, Scotland and England to the Americas. Notably, the McCorkell Line carried many immigrants who were fleeing the Great Irish Famine and sailed some of the most famous ships of the Western Ocean Ticket. Family background It is said three brothers named McCorquodale, part of the Clan Gunn, arrived in Ireland after the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie following the rebellion in 1745, having escaped in an open boat from the west coast of Scotland and landed on the County Antrim Coast.
