David Marsh (golfer)
David Max Marsh (April 1934 – 19 August 2022) was a British amateur golfer who was better known for serving as the chairman of Everton Football Club. Marsh was named captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews in 1990, having previously been president of the Lancashire and then English Unions between 1973 and 1975. He was the youngest captain of Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club in 1967. Having played Rugby Union at school, Marsh joined Southport Rugby Football Club in 1957, and regularly ran out for the First XV. Marsh won the English Amateur in 1964 and 1970, and represented England on 75 occasions. He also participated in the Walker Cup, being a member of the victorious Great Britain and Ireland team in 1971. He went on to captain the team in 1973 and 1975. 1959 Walker Cup
The 1959 Walker Cup, the 17th Walker Cup Match, was played on 15 and 16 May 1959, at Muirfield, Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland. The United States won by 9 matches to 3. The United States won all four of the foursomes matches on the first day. Although Great Britain and Ireland won three of the singles matches on the second day, it was a comfortable win for the United States. 1971 European Amateur Team Championship
The 1971 European Amateur Team Championship took place 24–27 June at Golf Club de Lausanne, in Lausanne, Switzerland. It was the seventh men's golf European Amateur Team Championship. Venue The hosting club was Golf Club de Lausanne, founded in 1921, with its course, at an altitude of 850 metres, situated 5 kilometers north of Lausanne. 18 holes were completed and inaugurated in 1931. With most of the holes modified, a new course, designed by greenkeeper Hermann Narbel, were created and completed in 1962. The European Amateur Team Championship is a European amateur team golf championship for men organised by the European Golf Association which was introduced in 1959. The championship was played in odd-numbered years from 1959 to 2007 and has been played annually since 2008 (with the exception of 2012). St Andrews Trophy
The St Andrews Trophy is a biennial men's team golf tournament contested between teams of amateur golfers representing Great Britain & Ireland and the Continent of Europe. It takes its name from St Andrews in Scotland. It was first played in 1956 and takes place in even-numbered years; Great Britain & Ireland plays in the United States in the Walker Cup in odd-numbered years. In 2025 the St Andrews Trophy will move to odd-numbered years and the Walker Cup will be played from even-numbered years from 2026. The Amateurs–Professionals Match was an annual men's team golf competition between teams of golfers from Great Britain and Ireland representing amateurs and professionals. It was played from 1956 to 1960. The Professionals won four of the five contests but the Amateurs won in 1958. The match was organised by the R&A and the PGA. History Two matches between teams of amateurs and professionals had been played in late 1954 and early 1955. The first was a match between the British 1954 Joy Cup team and a team of amateurs in November 1954. The professionals won the foursomes 3–2 but the singles were washed out. The 1975 Walker Cup, the 25th Walker Cup Match, was played on 28 and 29 May 1975, on the Old Course at St Andrews, Scotland. The event was won by the United States 15½ to 8½.
