David Mackay (architect)
David John Mackay (1933 – 2014) was a British architect and partner at MBM, an architecture firm based in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. He was mostly active in Catalonia. Biography David John Mackay was born on 25 December 1933 in Eastbourne, Sussex, England. His father was a "colonial administrator" in India and Ghana, and his parents mostly lived abroad. Mackay was the youngest child in the family and attended boarding schools in England, Ireland and Scotland. In 1957, he married Catalan Roser Jarque, whom he met in London. In 1958, Mackay and Roser moved to Barcelona after college. Career He was mostly active in designing in Catalonia, where among other projects he worked on the design for the renovation of the port area of Barcelona, and the design and construction of the Olympic Village there in 1992. The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) is the professional body for architects in Scotland. History Previously the (lapsed) Architectural Institute of Scotland, it was re-founded in 1916 as the Incorporation of Architects in Scotland by architect Robert Rowand Anderson (1834–1921) from his sick bed. Anderson donated his Georgian architecture, Georgian townhouse in Edinburgh to be used as its home, where the organisation still remains. It was given its first Royal charter in 1922, followed by a second in 1929. Past presidents include leading Scottish architects such as John Keppie, Robert Lorimer, James Dunbar-Nasmith and Jack Coia. Plymouth Pavilions
Plymouth Pavilions is an entertainment and sports complex in Plymouth, Devon, England. The arena is used as an entertainment venue and also for corporate hire. The Pavilions is built on the site of the former Millbay railway station that is directly opposite the Duke of Cornwall Hotel. The granite pillars which can be seen outside the main entrance were once the gate posts to the station. Ice Rink and Pool Closure Plymouth Pavilions was one of the only indoor centres with an ice rink in Devon, but in 2022 due to the cost of living crisis, the company declared the Ice Rink would close for good. Plymouth Pavilions was also the home of a family fun indoor swimming pool - including an underwater-themed extension which closed in 2003; however on 18 March 2012, in response to the opening of the state-of-the-art Plymouth Life Centre, the swimming pool was shut down. MBM ARQUITECTES is an architecture and urban design Spanish firm founded in 1951, and named from the initials of the last names of the three founders partners Josep Martorell, Oriol Bohigas and David Mackay. Since 2000 the firm incorporates two young architects: Oriol Capdevila and Francesc Gual, who join the firm. All of them are Spanish and Mackay, who died in November 2014, was English-Irish.
