Lorange was awarded the Coast Guard Medal for extraordinary heroism during the rescue of a young boy near the Coast Guard station at Saipan. Coast Guard Medal Citation Date of Action: 19 March 1979 Date of Award: 21 June 1979 Petty Officer LORANGE is cited for extraordinary heroism on the afternoon of 19 March 1979 when he rescued a young boy from drowning in the turbulent surf at Agingan Point, Saipan, Northern Marianas Islands. The boy and a friend were fishing off the point when he was swept out to sea by the high surf. His young companion tossed a log out to the boy and ran for help. The boatswain's mate is a position in the United States Coast Guard. A boatswain's mate is a versatile role, with those holding the role expected to be capable of nearly any job in a Coast Guard vessel. The tasks include deck maintenance, navigation duties, and navigation. They can also take the helm of a ship when needed. Types of Duty BMs can be found in nearly every duty station available throughout the United States and various locations overseas. They serve on every Coast Guard Cutter, from harbor tugs to sea-going icebreakers. Coast Guard Medal
The Coast Guard Medal is a decoration of the United States military that is awarded to any service member who, while serving in any capacity with the United States Coast Guard, distinguishes themselves by heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy. For the decoration to be awarded, an individual must have performed a voluntary act of heroism in the face of great personal danger or of such a magnitude that it stands out distinctly above normal expectations. The Coast Guard Medal was first authorized by on 4 August 1949, but it was not until 1958 that the medal was actually bestowed. The first recipients of the Coast Guard Medal were FN Earl H. Leyda and BM3 Albert Raymond Johnson who were awarded the decoration in March 1958.
