David Jones (runner)
David Henry Jones (11 March 1940 – 1 June 2023) was a British athlete who competed in the 100 & 200 metres who competed at the 1960 Summer Olympics. Biography Jones, a son of a farmer, was educated at Felsted School. Jones became the British 220 yards champion after winning the British AAA Championships title at the 1959 AAA Championships and successfully defened the title the following year at the 1960 AAA Championships. At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, he represented Great Britain in the 4 x 100 metre relay where he won the bronze medal with his teammates Peter Radford, David Segal and Nick Whitehead. He reached the 100 metres semi-final where he was denied a place in the final in a photo finish with Ray Norton of the USA although there are photos that seem to suggest he finished ahead of Norton. Athletics At The 1962 British Empire And Commonwealth Games – Men's 220 Yards
The men's 220 yards at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games as part of the athletics programme was held at the Perry Lakes Stadium on Monday 26 November and Thursday 29 November 1962. The top four runners in each of the initial six heats qualified for the second round. Those 24 runners competed in four heats in the second round, with the top three runners from each heat qualifying for the semifinals. There were two semifinals, and only the top three from each heat advanced to the final. The event was won by Kenyan Seraphino Antao in 21.1 seconds, who also won the 100 yards earlier in the meet. Antao finished 0.4 seconds ahead of Englishman David Jones and 0.5 seconds ahead Johan du Preez representing the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland who won bronze. Len Carter
Leonard Walter Carter (born 21 November 1942) is a former British sprinter. Biography Carter finished third behind Seraphino Antao in the 2220 yards event at the 1962 AAA Championships. Later that year at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, he won the gold medal with the England team in the 4 x 110 yards relay. Seraphino Antao
Seraphino "Kelly" Antao (30 October 1937 – 6 September 2011) was a runner of Goan descent from Kenya. He won two events at the 1962 Commonwealth Games, making him the first Kenyan athlete to win a gold medal at an international level. Early life and education Seraphino Antao was born in Chandor, Goa on 30 October 1937 and grew up in Mombasa. He was the son of Diego Manuel and Anna Maria, and had six siblings. He was of Asian origin, and had several athletes in his family. While at Goan High School (now Mombasa High School) he took several sports, and was a good footballer. After being spotted by an athletics coach, he took part a local athletic event, where, running barefoot, his sprint times were only just short of national records. Ray Norton
Otis Ray Norton (born September 22, 1937) is a former American sprinter who competed in the 1960 Olympics in Rome. As a top-ranked sprinter, Norton's speed was highly coveted by the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL), who attempted with very limited success to convert Norton from track to football. He played parts of the 1960 and 1961 seasons for the team. Track career After graduating high school in 1955, Norton initially went to Oakland City College staying for just one year. He left in 1956 for San Jose State College, where he was coached by Lloyd (Bud) Winter. Nick Whitehead
Neville Joseph "Nick" Whitehead (29 May 1933 – 6 October 2002) was a Welsh sprinter and sports administrator. Early life and career Whitehead was born in Wrexham. He competed for Great Britain in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome in the 4 × 100 metres relay where he won the bronze medal with his teammates Peter Radford, David Jones and David Segal. He went on to win a Commonwealth Bronze medal in Perth, Western Australia in 1962 as part of the Welsh Relay Team. Later work He would later teach Physical Education at Carnegie Physical Training College in Leeds, now part of Leeds Metropolitan University. He was overall team manager of the British athletics team. He became director of the National Coaching Foundation and eventually Director of Development at the Sports Council for Wales (now Sport Wales). David Segal (athlete)
David Hugh Segal (born 20 March 1937) is a British former track and field athlete who competed in the sprint (running), sprints who competed at the 1956 Summer Olympics and the 1960 Summer Olympics. Biography Segal had best times of 9.5 seconds for the 100 yards and 21.0 seconds for the 220 yards. While competing in the United States, he ran a time of 20.4 seconds for the straight 220 yards. At one time, he held the English Native Record for the 220 yards and the 300 yards, running the later in 30.0 seconds. On rare occasions, he ran the 400 meters with his best time of 48.2 seconds. Segal became the List of British champions in 200 metres, British 220 yards champion after winning the British AAA Championships titles at the 1957 AAA Championships and the 1958 AAA Championships.
