David Hoffman (rabbi)
David Nachum Hoffman (1 February 1954 - 7 March 2011) was an American rabbi. He was best known as the spiritual leader of Temple Israel in Cape Town, South Africa from 1989 - 2006. Early life and career He was born in Los Angeles, California to parents, Samuel Rubin Hoffman (1928–2004) and Rochelle Chalip Hoffman (1926–1998). His father was a scientist and public school teacher who founded Camp Kinneret in Agoura, California in 1954 together with his wife. Rabbi Hoffman graduated from UCLA and later studied at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He completed his rabbinical studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America where he was ordained as a Conservative rabbi. Rabbi Hoffman was the Chairperson of the Interfaith Forum in Cape Town. He participated in this capacity in the Parliament of the World's Religions in 1999. Temple Israel (Cape Town)
The Temple Israel, also known as the Cape Town Progressive Jewish Congregation (CTPJC), is a Progressive Jewish congregation, located in Cape Town, with three synagogues located in each of Green Point, Wynberg and Milnerton, in the Western Cape region of South Africa. As three centres combined, they are the largest Progressive congregation in South Africa, and the second largest Jewish congregation in Cape Town after Marais Road Shul in Sea Point. The congregation started in Green Point in 1944, eight years after South Africa's first progressive synagogue opened in Hillbrow in Johannesburg. The Cape Town congregation caters to over 3,000 Progressive Jews in the city. The congregation is an affiliate of the South African Union for Progressive Judaism, which is part of the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ). Zackie Achmat
Abdurrazack "Zackie" Achmat (born 21 March 1962) is a South African activist and film director. He is a co-founder the Treatment Action Campaign and known worldwide for his activism on behalf of people living with HIV and AIDS in South Africa. He served as board member and co-director of Ndifuna Ukwazi (Dare to Know), an organisation which aims to build and support social justice organisations and leaders, and was the chairperson of Equal Education. In 2024, he stood as independent candidate in the South African National Elections. However, he did not garner enough support to secure a seat in parliament. Archbishop Desmond Tutu
Desmond Mpilo Tutu (7 October 193126 December 2021) was a South African Anglican bishop and theologian, known for his work as an anti-apartheid and human rights activist. He was Bishop of Johannesburg from 1985 to 1986 and then Archbishop of Cape Town from 1986 to 1996, in both cases being the first Black African to hold the position. Theologically, he sought to fuse ideas from Black theology with African theology. Tutu was born of mixed Xhosa and Motswana heritage to a poor family in Klerksdorp, South Africa. Entering adulthood, he trained as a teacher and married Nomalizo Leah Tutu, with whom he had several children. Uri Davis
Uriel "Uri" Davis (, ; born 8 June 1943 in Jerusalem) is an academic and civil rights activist. Davis has served as Vice-Chairman of the Israeli League for Human and Civil Rights and as lecturer in Peace Studies at the University of Bradford. Davis describes himself as "a Palestinian Hebrew national of Jewish origin, anti-Zionist, registered as Muslim and a citizen of an apartheid state - the State of Israel." There have been several meetings referred to as a Parliament of the World's Religions, the first being the World's Parliament of Religions of 1893, which was an attempt to create a global dialogue of faiths. The event was celebrated by another conference on its centenary in 1993. A rabbi (; ) is a spiritual leader or religious teacher in Judaism. One becomes a rabbi by being ordained by another rabbi—known as ''semikha''—following a course of study of Jewish history and texts such as the Talmud.
