Weber County ( ) is a county in the U.S. state of Utah. As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 262,223, making it Utah's fourth-most populous county. Its county seat and largest city is Ogden, the home of Weber State University. The county was named after a fur trapper John Weber. Weber County is part of the Ogden- Clearfield, UT Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as the Salt Lake City- Provo- Ogden, UT Combined Statistical Area. History The Weber Valley was visited by many trappers seeking beavers and muskrats along its streams. One of the first on record reached the area in 1824, traveling from Fort Bridger. He reported that the Bear River flowed into a salt bay. Peter Skene Ogden passed through in 1826, representing the Hudson's Bay Company. Fremont Island
Fremont Island is an island located in Great Salt Lake in northern Utah, United States. The size is about 4.6 square miles, or State owned, it is the lake's third largest island after Stansbury Island and Antelope Island. The island has also been known by several other names, including mo'ko-mom-bĭtc (in Gosiute Shoshoni), Castle Island, Coffin Island, Disappointment Island, and Miller Island. Human history Fremont Island is named for military leader and explorer John C. Frémont. In 1843, Kit Carson and John C. Frémont were the first explorers of European descent to visit the lake. Frémont was expecting to find an exotic paradise. Instead, he found little grass, no trees, water or game. He dubbed it “disappointment island.” During their visit Kit Carson carved a cross into a rock which can still be seen. Great Salt Lake
The Great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere and the eighth-largest terminal lake in the world. It lies in the northern part of the U.S. state of Utah and has a substantial impact upon the local climate, particularly through lake-effect snow. It is a remnant of Lake Bonneville, a prehistoric body of water that covered much of western Utah. The area of the lake can fluctuate substantially due to its low average depth of . In the 1980s, it reached a historic high of , and the West Desert Pumping Project was established to mitigate flooding by pumping water from the lake into the nearby desert. In 2021, after years of sustained drought and increased water diversion upstream of the lake, it fell to its lowest recorded area at , falling below the previous low set in 1963.
