David Copperfield is the protagonist after which the 1850 in literature, 1850 Charles Dickens novel ''David Copperfield'' was named. The character is widely thought to be based on Dickens himself, incorporating many elements of his own life. Origin Scholars believe that David Copperfield's childhood, career, friendships and love life were influenced by Dickens's experiences, especially his time working in a factory as a child. David's involvement with the law profession and later his career as a writer mirror the experiences of Dickens. Many of David's acquaintances are based on people Dickens actually knew. David's first wife, Dora Spenlow, is believed to be based upon Maria Beadnell, whom Dickens loved in his early youth. Dover ( ) is a town and major ferry port in Kent, southeast England. It faces France across the Strait of Dover, the narrowest part of the English Channel at from Cap Gris Nez in France. ''David Copperfield'' is a BBC television serial starring Ian McKellen in the title role of the adaptation of Charles Dickens's 1850 novel that began airing in January 1966. It also featured Tina Packer as Dora Flora Robson as Betsey Trotwood, Gordon Gostelow as Barkis, and Christopher Guard as young David. The screenplay adaptation was written by Vincent Tilsley, who had previously helmed the 1956 adaptation almost a decade prior. It had a viewership of over 12 million for its initial airings. Only four of the serial's thirteen episodes (3, 8, 9 and 11) are known to exist. Timothy Sydney Robert Hardy (29 October 1925 – 3 August 2017) was an English actor who had a long career in theatre, film and television. He began his career as a classical actor and later earned widespread recognition for roles such as Siegfried Farnon in the BBC television series '' All Creatures Great and Small'', Cornelius Fudge in the ''Harry Potter'' film series, and Winston Churchill in several productions, beginning with the Southern Television series '' Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years''. Frank Lawton Mokeley (30 September 1904 – 10 June 1969) was an English actor. Biography Frank Lawton was born in St Giles, London, on 30 September 1904. ''David Copperfield'' is a 1935 American film released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer based upon Charles Dickens' 1850 novel ''The Personal History, Adventures, Experience, & Observation of David Copperfield the Younger'' (though a number of characters and incidents from the novel were omitted). The story was adapted by Hugh Walpole from the Dickens novel, and the film was directed by George Cukor from a screenplay by Howard Estabrook and Lenore J. Coffee, who was not credited. Flora Foster was an American actress known for her roles in films during the silent film era. Biography Flora Foster was born in Boston to Anne Louise Ramsell Foster and Conrad Houteling Foster. Conrad Foster was a theater owner in Chicago and eventual mayor of Traverse City, Michigan. She worked with the Biograph Company and the Thanhouser Company. She had roles in at least several films; she played young David in ''David Copperfield'' (1911). Her sister, Edna Foster, was also a child actress. They both worked in vaudeville.
