Dave Cooke (born August 1, 1952) is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He was an Ontario New Democratic Party, NDP member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, provincial legislature from 1977 to 1997, and was a senior cabinet minister in the government of Bob Rae. Background Cooke was born in Windsor, Ontario, the son of Sid and Betty Cooke. He attended the University of Windsor and graduated with a degree in social work. He worked as a social worker at the Essex Children's Aid Society in Windsor. He served on the Windsor Planning Board in 1974 and was a member of the Windsor Board of Education from 1975 to 1976. Dave Cooke (born c. 1954) is the founder of two charities: Operation Christmas Child and Teams4U. Cooke founded the charity Operation Christmas Child (now Samaritan's Purse) in 1990 and developed, then worked for, the biggest shoebox programme in the world. Early years Cooke was born in Chester, the second child of John and Ruth Cooke. His father worked in sales and his mother ran the household. He was brought up in the Exclusive Brethren church but found growing up in the Brethren very restrictive, and he rebelled from an early age. He attended Hoole Secondary Modern but left at the age of 14 with no qualifications and several brushes with the law. Mr Fox, his headteacher at the time, said "Cooke, you will never achieve anything with your life." Cooke trained to be a joiner and had his own glazing company. Rear Admiral David John Cooke, (15 August 1955 – 1 December 2014) was a Royal Navy officer who served in submarines and later played an important part in defence procurement. He rose to flag rank and was put in charge of all of Britain's naval assets and made chief of the submarine service. Robin Arthur Philip Duval (born 1941) was Director of the British Board of Film Classification, (the "Film Censor"), from 1999 to 2004. Duval was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham before reading history at University College London (UCL) during which he took part in the first series of University Challenge. He subsequently studied at the University of Michigan as a Fulbright Scholar. He began his career in BBC radio and as a TV advertisement writer and producer at J. Walter Thompson. In 1968 he joined the Central Office of Information (COI), eventually becoming their Head of Television and Film Production. He then became Deputy Director of Programmes at the Independent Television Commission before succeeding James Ferman as Director of the BBFC in 1999.
