Dave Spence (cricketer)
David Victor Spence (born 8 January 1930) is a former New Zealand cricketer who played first-class cricket for Central Districts from 1955 to 1962. Dave Spence played five matches for Central Districts in 1955–56, one in 1960–61, and five more in 1961–62. A middle-order batsman and leg-spin bowler, he took his best bowling figures of 5 for 38 in a victory over Wellington in the second match of the 1955–56 Plunket Shield season, then made his highest score of 61 in an innings victory over Otago in the next match 11 days later. At the time he was considered a potential Test player. However, after that season he played only six more first-class matches, in which he took five wickets. Spence also played Hawke Cup cricket for Hawke's Bay from 1950 to 1953, and for Nelson from 1954 to 1967. Hastings, New Zealand
Hastings (; mi, Heretaunga) is an inland city of New Zealand and is one of the two major urban areas in Hawke's Bay, on the east coast of the North Island. Nelson Cricket Team
Nelson cricket team is a cricket team representing the Nelson Region of New Zealand. It played first-class cricket from 1874 to 1891, and currently competes in the Hawke Cup. Playing history Cricket was first reported as being played in Nelson in the ''Nelson Examiner'' in March 1844, in a match between the Surveyors of the Land Company and Nelson. Nelson as a representative team played interprovincial cricket as early as 1862, later first playing first-class cricket in 1873-74 against Wellington at the Basin Reserve, becoming the fifth team to play first-class cricket in New Zealand. This match is also notable for having ended in a tie, the eighth time this had happened and one of sixty occasions overall that a first-class match has ended in such a result. Doug Bowden
Douglas William Bowden (19 July 1927 – 20 January 2021) was a New Zealand cricketer who played first-class cricket for Central Districts in New Zealand from 1950 to 1957. Career Bowden was born in Palmerston North and attended Palmerston North Boys' High School, where he captained the first XI in 1945. He opened the batting with Ted Meuli in Central Districts' inaugural first-class match, at the start of the 1950–51 season, but was not successful. He next played in 1953–54, when Central Districts won the Plunket Shield for the first time, then played most of Central Districts' matches until 1957–58. His only fifty came in 1953–54, when he made 60, adding 103 for the second wicket with John Guy, in the victory over Canterbury. He also played in the Hawke Cup for Manawatu from 1945–46 to 1957–58, and for Bay of Plenty in 1963–64. The Hawke Cup is a non-first-class cricket competition for New Zealand's district associations. Apart from 1910–11, 1912–13 and 2000–01 the competition has always been on a challenge basis. To win the Hawke Cup, the challengers must beat the holders, either outright or on the first innings in a drawn match, on the holders' home ground. Teams from New Zealand's four main centres, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, have not usually competed for the Hawke Cup, although they did participate in the latter half of the 1990s. They were excluded again from the 2000–01 season. From 2000 to 2010 the team from Hamilton, New Zealand's fourth-largest urban area, was the most successful. Since then the title has changed hands numerous times, Manawatu, Hawke's Bay and Bay of Plenty being especially prominent. Hawke's Bay Cricket Team
The Hawke's Bay cricket team, representing the Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand, played first-class cricket between 1883–84 and 1920–21, and competed in the Plunket Shield in the 1914–15 and 1920–21 seasons. The side has continued to appear in minor cricket and now competes in the Hawke Cup competition. First-class history In their first match at first-class level, against Wellington at the Basin Reserve in February 1884, Hawke's Bay were dismissed for just 32 in their second innings thanks to Joseph Firth's remarkable return of 8 for 13 from 13 four-ball overs. In their next match, in 1884–85, they beat Wellington at Napier Recreation Ground by eight wickets. They lost their next three matches, all against Wellington, before trouncing Taranaki in two matches in 1891–92. The Central Stags, formerly known as Central Districts, are a first-class cricket team based in central New Zealand. They are the men's representative side of the Central Districts Cricket Association.
