Dave Nicoll
Dave Nicoll (11 May 1944 – 9 March 2023) was an English professional Grand Prix motocross racer and at the time of his death in March 2023 the incumbent FIM's world championship Clerk of the Course. Nicoll began motorcycle racing at the age of 16 and received his first sponsorship from a Greeves distributor. At the age of 17, he received factory sponsorship from the James motorcycle company. In 1964, he began competing in the 500cc motocross world championships for the Matchless factory racing team. After three seasons with the Matchless team, he moved to the BSA factory team. His only Grand Prix victory came at the 1969 500cc Luxembourg Grand Prix. In 1970, Nicoll defeated world champions Joel Robert and Jeff Smith to win the 1970 Trans-AMA motocross series, established by the American Motorcyclist Association as a pilot event to help establish motocross in the United States. Kurt Nicoll
Kurt Nicoll (born 15 November 1964) is an English former professional motocross racer. Nicoll was one of the top riders in the Motocross Grand Prix World Championships during the late 1980s and early 1990s, finishing as the runner up four times in the F.I.M. 500cc world championships. Nicoll won 13 World Motocross Grands Prix and 7 ACU British National Championships. Nicoll was a member of the victorious 1994 British Motocross des Nations team that included Paul Malin and Rob Herring. The upset victory marked the first time a British team had won the event since 1967 and, broke a 13-year American winning streak at the Motocross des Nations. In 2004 and 2009 Nicoll won the American Motorcycle Association's Supermoto Unlimited Championship. He also won the AMA National Vet Championship in Endurocross in 2011 and 2012. 1970 Trans-AMA Motocross Series
The 1970 Trans-AMA motocross series was an international series established by the American Motorcyclist Association as a pilot event to help establish motocross in the United States. The motocross series was an invitational based on a combined 250 and 500cc engine displacement formula, run on American tracks featuring the top riders from the F.I.M. world championship against the top American riders. BSA factory rider Dave Nicoll claimed the championship without winning a single event, due to his consistent results. The Suzuki team of Joel Robert and Olle Petterson didn't join the event until the third race of the series. Robert went on to dominate, but his late start hurt his chances to claim the overall championship. Jeffrey Vincent Smith (born 1 January 1934) is an English former professional motorcycle racer. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 1954 to 1969 as a member of the BSA factory racing team. Smith's achievements in motorcycle racing include two FIM 500cc Motocross World Championships (1964, 1965), two British Trials Championships, four individual race wins in the Motocross des Nations, one Scottish Six Days Trial win and eight ISDT Gold Medals. In 1970, Smith was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) and in 2000 he was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. Greeves (motorcycles)
Greeves Motorcycles was a British motorcycle manufacturer founded by Bert Greeves which produced a range of road machines, and later competition mounts for observed trials, scrambles and road racing. The original company produced motorcycles from 1952, funded by a contract with the Ministry of Pensions for their Invacar, a three-wheeler for disabled drivers. After many wins in motorcycle trials competitions and developing a successful US export market, the original company ceased trading following a fire in 1977. Richard Deal bought the rights to the Greeves name in May 1999. The 1964 Motocross World Championship was the 8th edition of the Motocross World Championship organized by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme, FIM and reserved for 500cc and 250cc motorcycles.
