David Meslin is community organizer and activist in Toronto. He is the founder of the Toronto Public Space Committee and Cycle Toronto, and organized City Idol. He was involved in founding 'Spacing' magazine, and has written a number of its articles. He also founded the Ranked Ballot Initiative of Toronto. Toronto Public Space Committee
The Toronto Public Space Committee (TPSC) is a volunteer-run, non-profit organization located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada that defends the city’s public space from corporate and private forces, including cars and outdoor advertising. The TPSC argues that public property, such as sidewalks, bike paths, parks, and squares, should be the independent and cultural “counterbalance” to the profit-driven private sector. As a grassroots organization, the TPSC is financed almost entirely on donations, as well as various contributions in kind from its members, such as seeds and gardening tools. The TPSC uses a model of consensus decision-making at its monthly open meetings. The structure of the organization is currently undergoing a re-evaluation by its members. Cycle Toronto
Cycle Toronto is a Canadian cycling advocacy and charity organization based in Toronto, Ontario. Founded in 2008 as the Toronto Cyclists Union, the group adopted its current name in 2012 and became a registered charity in 2021. Cycle Toronto host public education and safety workshops, organizes cycling events, and publishes the Toronto Cycling Handbook. History A number of cycling activists had talked about starting an advocacy and lobbying organization for Toronto over the years, similar to the Active Transportation Alliance in Chicago or Transportation Alternatives in New York City. City Idol
{{more citations needed, date=July 2010 City Idol was a contest and part of a 2006 initiative called Who Runs This Town, a project to boost citizen interest and participation in municipal politics in Toronto. Overview Who Runs This Town and City Idol were created by David Meslin, founder of the Toronto Public Space Committee. The City Idol contest sought out ordinary Torontonians to seek elected office in the 2006 municipal election on November 13. The goal was to have 100 candidates participate in a series of events whereby some would be voted off by a live audience. The "prize" was a campaign to run for Toronto city council, in the form of volunteer support (not funds). The first round was held at the Danforth Music Hall on April 28, 2006, and saw 70 candidates give one-minute speeches to an audience of more than 600 people who then voted for five candidates. ''Spacing'' is a magazine published in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Focusing on issues affecting the public realm in Toronto and nationally (four issues each per year), ''Spacing'' was originally published by the Toronto Public Space Committee in house until it was spun off as a wholly independent magazine after the first issue. ''Ranked Ballot Initiative of Toronto'' (RaBIT) is a Canadian, grassroots, public policy and advocacy group that supports reforming the municipal electoral voting system in the city of Toronto from a first-past-the-post voting system to instant runoff voting. Founding and Mission Founded by "community choreographer" Dave Meslin, RaBIT grew out of a series of community town hall meetings conducted under the name ''Better Ballots'' in the Spring of 2010.
