Dave Johnson (announcer)
Dave Johnson (born May 25, 1941) is an American announcer and sportscaster, best known for his work in horse racing with ABC and NBC Sports and at various race tracks in New York and New Jersey. He also called races in California. His signature line — "And ''down'' the stretch they come!" — is instantly recognizable throughout the sport, and is often imitated by comedians, notably David Letterman. From 1972 to 1977, Johnson was the public address announcer for the tracks of the New York Racing Association. In 1977 he moved to the new Meadowlands Racetrack in New Jersey, calling both Thoroughbred and harness racing. He maintained his Meadowlands schedule into the early 21st century. Johnson called the Kentucky Derby for ABC Sports from 1978 to 1980 and 1987 to 2000, and the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes from 1987 to 2000. The Preakness Stakes is an American thoroughbred horse race held annually on Armed Forces Day, the third Saturday in May at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland (except in 2026 when it will move to Laurel Park (race track), Laurel Park during reconstruction of Pimlico). ''Ruffian'' is a 2007 American television film that tells the story of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, U.S. Racing Hall of Fame Eclipse Award, Champion Thoroughbred filly Ruffian (horse), Ruffian who went undefeated until her Animal euthanasia, death after breaking down in a nationally televised match race at Belmont Park on July 6, 1975 against the Kentucky Derby winner, Foolish Pleasure. Belmont Park
Belmont Park is a thoroughbred racing, thoroughbred horse racetrack in Elmont, New York, just east of New York City limits best known for hosting the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the American Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing (United States), Triple Crown. It was opened on May 4, 1905, and is one of the most well known racetracks in the United States. The original structure was demolished in 1963, and a second facility opened in 1968. The second structure was demolished in 2023, and a third version of Belmont Park is expected to open in 2026. Lucas Martin "Luke" Kruytbosch ( ; May 27, 1961 – July 14, 2008) was an American Thoroughbred horse racing announcer. He was best known as the on-track public-address voice of Churchill Downs and Kentucky Derby from 1999 until his death. He also called races at Turf Paradise, Ellis Park Racecourse, Kentucky Downs, Hollywood Park Racetrack, Hollywood Park, Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino, Sunland Park, Northlands Park and Ruidoso Downs (track), Ruidoso Downs during his career.
