Dave Cooke (born c. 1954) is the founder of two charities: Operation Christmas Child Samaritan's Purse is an evangelical Christian humanitarian aid organization that provides aid to people in physical need as a key part of its Christian missionary work. Cooke founded the charity Operation Christmas Child (now Samaritan's Purse) in 1990 and developed, then worked for, the biggest shoebox programme in the world. Early years Cooke was born in Chester, the second child of John and Ruth Cooke. His father worked in sales and his mother ran the household. He was brought up in the Exclusive Brethren church but found growing up in the Brethren very restrictive, and he rebelled from an early age. He attended Hoole Secondary Modern but left at the age of 14 with no qualifications and several brushes with the law. The organization's president is Franklin Graham, son of Christian evangelist Billy Graham. The name of the organization is derived from the New Testament Parable of the Good Samaritan. With international headquarters in Boone, North Carolina, the organization also maintains warehouse and aviation facilities in nearby North Wilkesboro and Greensboro, North Carolina. The organization has been criticized for requiring volunteers to sign a controversial Statement of Faith which condemns homosexuality and same-sex marriage. The organization's board of directors, which includes his son, has also been criticized for the $661,000 yearly salary paid to Graham, which is 40–50% more than similar non-profit organizations. The Exclusive Brethren are a subset of the Christian evangelical movement generally described as the Plymouth Brethren. They are distinguished from the Open Brethren from whom they separated in 1848. The Exclusive Brethren are now divided into a number of groups, most of which differ on minor points of doctrine or practice.
