Dave Hernandez
Dave Hernandez (born September 20, 1970, Guadalajara, Mexico) is a Mexican guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is best known as a former member of the American indie rock band The Shins, with whom he recorded four studio albums. Hernandez is currently the guitarist of the post-punk band The Intelligence, and is the vocalist and guitarist of the punk band Scared of Chaka. Hernandez met Shins frontman James Mercer when both lived in Albuquerque playing in underground bands in the early/mid 1990s. Hernandez's punk band Scared of Chaka and Mercer's indie pop band Flake were both part of the thriving Albuquerque independent rock scene that spawned bands like The Drags, The Rondelles, and Henrys Dress. ''Wincing the Night Away'' is the third studio album by the indie rock group The Shins. It was released by Sub Pop Records on January 23, 2007, and is the last album released under The Shins' contract with Sub Pop. The album was recorded in James Mercer's basement studio, Phil Ek's home in Seattle and in Oregon City with the veteran producer Joe Chiccarelli. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Writing and recording Chiccareli had become acquainted with Mercer while working with Pink Martini in Portland, Oregon. At the time Mercer was recording the new Shins album on his own and found that it was not going the way he wanted and at the speed he wanted. ''Chutes Too Narrow'' is the second studio album by American rock band The Shins. Produced by Phil Ek and the band themselves, the album was released on October 21, 2003, through Sub Pop. The album title comes from a lyric in the song "Young Pilgrims". The album was very well received by critics, garnering an overall score of 88/100 on Metacritic. As of August 2008 according to Nielsen SoundScan, they have sold over 393,000 copies to date. ''Chutes Too Narrow'' features cleaner production standards than The Shins' "lo-fi" debut '' Oh, Inverted World''.
