Dave Grohl is an American singer, songwriter, and musician whose discography consists of 16 studio albums, six live albums, eight compilation albums, six EPs, and four soundtracks, and also includes his other collaborations and work as a studio musician with 26 additional artists. A large portion of his releases have come as the drummer of Nirvana (1990–1994) and as the frontman of Foo Fighters (1995–present). Grohl began playing music in the 1980s and was a member of Freak Baby, whose name was later changed to Mission Impossible after Grohl switched from guitarist to drummer. The band recorded demos under both names and released a split EP with Lünch Meat, originally issued as ''Thanks'' (1986), later retitled ''Getting Shit for Growing Up Different''. David Eric Grohl (; born January 14, 1969) is an American musician. He founded the rock band Foo Fighters, of which he is the lead singer, guitarist, principal songwriter, and only consistent member. From 1990 to 1994, he was the drummer of the grunge band Nirvana (band), Nirvana. In 1986, at age 17, Grohl joined the punk rock band Scream (band), Scream, replacing drummer Kent Stax. After Scream broke up in 1990, Grohl became the drummer for Nirvana. He first appeared on the band's second album, ''Nevermind'' (1991). After the 1994 suicide of Kurt Cobain, Nirvana disbanded and Grohl formed Foo Fighters as a one-man project. ''Backbeat'' is the original soundtrack of the 1994 film ''Backbeat'' starring Stephen Dorff, Sheryl Lee, Gary Bakewell and Ian Hart. The music was produced by Don Was. A score based album with Don Was' original music was also released. Recording sessions for the album started on March 26, 1993 at Ocean Way Recording, in Los Angeles, California. Many of the songs on the album were first takes. ''Pocketwatch'' is a cassette album by Dave Grohl, under the pseudonym Late!, released in 1992, on the now-defunct indie label Simple Machines as part of their Tool Cassette Series. Background In the summer of 1991, Dave Grohl went into WGNS Studios and recorded four songs, playing all the instruments himself. The recording was combined with six songs from a previous Upland Studios session recorded in late 1990. Both sessions occurred after Grohl had joined Nirvana. A tape of the songs, given to Simple Machines co-founder Jenny Toomey by Grohl, immediately became a candidate for the label's Tool Cassette Series. The 1990 sessions emerged as Grohl, then the drummer of Scream, requested his producer friend Barrett Jones to record songs on his home 8-track tape recorder. On April 8, 1994, Kurt Cobain, the lead singer and guitarist of the American rock band Nirvana (band), Nirvana, was found dead at his home on Lake Washington Boulevard in Seattle, Washington (state), Washington.
