Daurian Nature Reserve
The Daurian Nature Reserve () is a Russian zapovednik (strict nature reserve) situated in the southern part of Zabaykalsky Krai in Siberia, Russia, close to the border with Mongolia. It is part of a World Heritage Site named "The Landscapes of Dauria". The reserve was established in 1987 to protect the dry steppes and wetlands of South Siberia. It is contiguous with the Dornod Mongol Biosphere Reserve in Mongolia, a area of steppe immediately to the south. The reserve comprises , of which about constitute the buffer zone which surrounds several protected core zones. The core area is of about and is divided into 9 plots. The buffer zone of the reserve covers the Torey Lakes: two large lakes called Barun-Torey and Zun-Torey. The Daurian hedgehog (''Mesechinus dauuricus'') is a solitary small hedgehog. Taxonomy ''Mesechinus dauuricus'' was first described in 1842 by Carl Jakob Sundevall, as the first species of the genus '' Mesechinus''. Description The adult Daurian hedgehog is 15 to 20 centimeters long and weighs up to 1 kilogram (usually around 600 grams). Most live up to six years in nature. Like most hedgehog species in temperate regions, the Daurian hibernates during the winter. Pallas Cat
The Pallas's cat (''Otocolobus manul''), also known as the manul, is a small wild cat with long and dense light grey fur, and rounded ears set low on the sides of the head. Its head-and-body length ranges from with a long bushy tail.
