Dasklip Pass
Dasklip Pass is situated in the Western Cape province of South Africa on an off-road near Porterville along the R365 highway. The road provides access to the plateau in the Groot Winterhoek mountains and the Groot Winterhoek Wilderness Area; summiting at a height of 700 metres above sea level. It was privately built by farmers located on the plateau. The road was upgraded to an asphalt road in the early 2000s. The road is noted for both its views of the Swartland plains below and as a popular launch site for hang gliders. Groot Winterhoek
The Groot Winterhoek mountains are located in the Western Cape province of South Africa and are part of the Cape Fold Belt comprising a watershed area of 552,606 hectares. They rise to a maximum height of 2077 m just north of the town of Tulbagh as Groot Winterhoek peak. The mountains are predominantly made up of Table Mountain sandstone. Porterville, Western Cape
Porterville is a town in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The town is located at the foot of the Olifants River Mountains, 27 km south-east of Piketberg and 155 km north-east of Cape Town. It is situated 140 km north of Cape Town on R44 road at the base of the Olifants River mountains. The Dasklip Pass to the surrounding Groot Winterhoek mountains is located 14 km outside of the town. The Soom Shale, a notable deposit of Late Ordovician era fossils, is located near the town. Agriculture in the area is dominated by wheat production. R365 (South Africa)
The R365 is a Regional Route in South Africa that connects Piketberg and Lamberts Bay. Its north-western terminus is at the R364 in Lamberts Bay. From there it heads south then east for 29 kilometres to reach Leipoldtville. It continues for a further 57 kilometres in a south-easterly to south-south-easterly direction before crossing the Kruismans River and meeting the R366 at a T-junction from the south. Here, turning right, the westerly route is signed as the R366 to Elands Bay. The R365 turns left here, continuing east before veering south. After 13 kilometres, a turnoff to the left is given to Eendekuil. Continuing south, it ends at a four-way junction with the R44 at Piketberg. The R365 enters from the north, with the south and west roads unsigned. The easterly road is the westerly terminus of the R44. Groot Winterhoek Wilderness Area
Groot () is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Swartland
The Swartland is a region of Western Cape Province that begins some north of Cape Town and consists of the area between the towns of Malmesbury in the south, Darling in the west, Piketberg in the north, Moorreesburg in the middle and the Riebeek West and Riebeek Kasteel in the east. Jan van Riebeeck called this softly undulating country between the mountain ranges "Het Zwarte Land" (the Black Land) because of the endemic Renosterbos (''Elytropappus rhinocerotis''). After the rains, mainly in winter, the Renosterbos takes on a dark appearance when viewed from the distance in large numbers. This is due to the fine leaf-hairs adhering to the leaves when wet. The wide fertile plain is the bread basket of Cape Town with its wheat fields reaching up to the foot of the mountains, interrupted by wine, fruit, and vegetable farms. 2015 Western Cape Fire Season
The 2015 Cape wildfires were a series of wildfires that burned across the Western Cape from February to April 2015. Major fires burned across the Cape Peninsula starting on 1 March in Muizenberg and burning until 9 March, when firefighters extinguished it. The fire resulted in 1 death, 56 injuries, over of burnt land, and 13 damaged properties, of which 3 were destroyed. The cause of the fire was later determined to be arson. There were also major fires near Wellington and Porteville starting in February, which claimed the lives of 3 firefighters and a fire in Stellenbosch that caused the evacuation of the University of Stellenbosch and burned over of land.
