Darren Vigil Gray
Darren Vigil Gray is a Jicarilla Apache painter and musician. He draws inspiration for his work from abstract expressionists such as Jackson Pollock and from his heritage. Early life and influences Gray was born in Dulce, New Mexico to Thaymeus Bitseedy and Charlie Vigil. His father was a rodeo cowboy and rancher and performed as a Western guitarist in a band called the Apache Red Vests. He was also considered to be the tribal leader. His mother studied operatic voice in college and encouraged Gray to learn the piano and drums as a child. These experiences with his parents, along with his encounters with bands later during his career, has prompted Gray to note that "music and art are inextricably linked." During his teenage years, his parents were facing issues such as a divorce, which prompted him to desire leaving them. The divorce took a toll on Gray's brother, who took a long time to recover. Dulce ( or ; ) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, United States. Willem de Kooning ( , ; April 24, 1904 – March 19, 1997) was a Dutch-American abstract expressionist artist. Born in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, he moved to the United States in 1926, becoming a US citizen in 1962. In 1943, he married painter Elaine de Kooning, Elaine Fried. The Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian is a museum devoted to Native American arts. It is located in Santa Fe, New Mexico and was founded in 1937 by Mary Cabot Wheelwright, who came from Boston, and Hastiin Klah, a Navajo singer and medicine man. History Wheelwright and Klah were introduced in 1921 and quickly became close friends. It was not long before they determined to create a permanent record of Klah's and other singers’ ritual knowledge. Klah dictated and Wheelwright recorded the Navajo Creation Story and other great narratives that form the basis of Navajo religion.
