David Bedell-Sivright
David Revell "Darkie" Bedell-Sivright (8 December 1880 – 5 September 1915) was a Scottish international rugby union forward who captained both Scotland and the British Isles. Born in Edinburgh, and educated at Fettes College where he learned to play rugby, he studied at Cambridge University and earned four Blues playing for them in the Varsity Match. He was first selected for Scotland in 1900 in a match against Wales. After playing in all of Scotland's Home Nations Championship matches in 1901, 1902 and 1903, Bedell-Sivright toured with the British Isles side – now known as the British & Irish Lions – that toured South Africa in 1903. After playing the first 12 matches of the tour, he was injured and so did not play in any of the Test matches against South Africa. Harlond Clift
Harlond Benton "Darkie" Clift (August 12, 1912 – April 27, 1992) was a Major League Baseball (MLB) third baseman for the St. Louis Browns (1934–1943) and the Washington Senators (1943–1945). He was an All-Star for the American League in 1937. He threw and batted right-handed, and was listed as tall and . Early life Clift was born in El Reno, Oklahoma. He tried out for the St. Louis Browns in 1931 and sustained an unusual injury during the tryout. While reaching to field a ball, Clift stepped on his own glove, which caused him to trip and roll forward. He broke his collarbone in the fall. Envoy Richard 'Darkie’ Hutton (1849 – 1921) was a reformed criminal and former member of the Charles Peace gang who spent 23 years in prison before he was converted and became an evangelist and Officer in The Salvation Army. Because he was undersize and swarthy, Hutton was given the nickname ‘Darkie’. Hutton had been a thief from the age of eight when he stole a 1 lb weight from his tobacconist employer and sold it for a penny. His family life was troubled with an alcoholic father, and while still a child he ran away to sea where he travelled to Quebec, Bombay, Shanghai and Calcutta, among other destinations. Twice he was court-martialled and, still in his teens, was dishonourably discharged from the navy. Darkey Kelly
Dorcas "Darkey" Kelly (died 7 January 1761) was an Irish brothel-keeper and alleged serial killer who was burned at the stake in Dublin in 1761. Biography Dorcas Kelly was a madam who operated the Maiden Tower brothel on Copper Alley, off Fishamble Street in the southwest part of Dublin, Ireland. Convicted of killing shoemaker John Dowling on St. Patrick's Day 1760, Kelly was executed by partial hanging and burning at the stake on Gallows Road (modern Baggot Street) on 7 January 1761. After her execution she was waked by prostitutes on Copper Alley; thirteen of them were arrested for disorder and sent to Newgate Prison, Dublin. Paddy Prendergast (racehorse Trainer)
Patrick Joseph Prendergast (1910–1980), known as Paddy "Darkie" Prendergast was an Irish trainer of racehorses. He won seventeen Irish classics and became the first Irish trainer to have a major impact on British flat racing. He trained the first Irish winners of the 2000 Guineas and The Oaks and was British champion trainer for three successive seasons. Early career Paddy Prendergast was born at Carlow in County Carlow, the eldest of a brotherhood of jockeys, but moved to Athy in County Kildare when very young. His father, Pat, was a horse trader and was known "as a good judge of hunters and other breeds". Darkey Ephraim Africa, also spelled Darkie Afrika, is a South African politician and diplomat who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature until 2009. During that time, he served in the North West Executive Council under Premiers Popo Molefe and Edna Molewa. He later served as Consul-General of the South African High Commission in Nigeria. Legislative career Africa was involved in the anti-apartheid movement. After South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994, he was elected to represent the ANC in North West Provincial Legislature and joined Premier Popo Molefe's Executive Council as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Local Government. Darkie Ellis (born Cyril Hills; 15 December 1914 – 14 December 1946) was a British professional boxer, from 1931 to 1940. He was the son of William Hills and Elizabeth Farnsworth. His birth was registered in the December quarter of 1914. He was at various times a welterweight; middleweight and light-heavyweight, and fought in 91 professional bouts. He was promoted as "middleweight champion of England". He represented England at a tournament in Antwerp, Belgium on 21 March 1939. He served in the military in the Second World War. Ellis, who was black, married a white woman from Bridlington, East Riding of Yorkshire, Joyce, and retired there. They had two daughters. He died in his early thirties. His wife later remarried. ''The War of Darkie Pilbeam'' was a three-part period drama set in the North of England during World War II, which originally aired on British television in 1968.
