Daphne Steele
Daphne Steele (15 October 1927 – 23 July 2004) was a Guyanese nurse and midwife who in 1964 became the first Black matron in the National Health Service. Early life Daphne Adrianna Steele was born on 15 October 1927 in the region of Essequibo, British Guiana (now part of Guyana) as the eldest of nine children. Her younger sister Carmen Steele later became better known as the actress Carmen Munroe. Her mother Maude was a piano teacher and her father worked as a pharmacist who travelled around the colony to work. The family were sufficiently well off to be able to afford servants to clean the family house. Medical career She underwent training in nursing and midwifery at the public hospital in Georgetown in 1945. She emigrated to the United Kingdom in 1951, as part of the British Government seeking to recruit people to the new National Health Service (NHS). Essequibo (colony)
Essequibo ( ; ) was a Dutch colony in the Guianas and later a county on the Essequibo River in the Guiana region on the north coast of South America. It was a colony of the Dutch West India Company between 1616 and 1792 and a colony of the Dutch state from 1792 until 1815. It was merged with Demerara in 1812 by the British who took control. It formally became a British colony in 1815 until Demerara-Essequibo was merged with Berbice to form the colony of British Guiana in 1831. In 1838, it became a county of British Guiana till 1958. Menston
Menston is a village and civil parish in the City of Bradford in the county of West Yorkshire, England.
