Daniel Mears (politician)
Daniel Mears Jr. (July 28, 1819September 22, 1906) was an American lumberman, Democratic politician, and Wisconsin pioneer. He was a member of the Wisconsin Senate, representing the vast northwest quadrant of the state during the 1858 and 1859 sessions. Biography Daniel Mears was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, in July 1819. He came west in 1848, first settling at Taylors Falls, Minnesota Territory, where he operated a store for a year. In 1849, he moved across the Mississippi River to St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, where he continued his merchandising and also began working in the lumber industry, with the lumber firm Nelson Carlton Company. In 1852, he moved to Hudson, Wisconsin, where he constructed the first saw mill in the village. He ultimately moved to a farm in Osceola, Wisconsin, about 1855, where he remained for the rest of his life. Wisconsin's 28th Senate District
The 28th Senate district of Wisconsin is one of 33 districts in the Wisconsin Senate. Located in southeast Wisconsin, the district comprises southeast Waukesha County and northwest Racine County. It includes the cities of Muskego, New Berlin, and most of the city of Waukesha, along with the villages of Big Bend, Mukwonago, and Waterford. Current elected officials Julian Bradley is the senator representing the 28th district. He was first elected in the 2020 general election. The Territory of Minnesota was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from March 3, 1849, until May 11, 1858, when the eastern portion of the territory was admitted to the Union as the state of Minnesota and the western portion became unorganized territory and shortly after was reorganized as part of the Dakota Territory. History The Minnesota Territory was formed on March 3, 1849, encompassing the entirety of the present-day state of Minnesota and the majority portions of modern-day North and South Dakota east of the Missouri and White Earth Rivers. Wisconsin State Assembly
The Wisconsin State Assembly is the lower house of the Wisconsin Legislature. Together with the smaller Wisconsin Senate, the two constitute the legislative branch of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The Assembly is controlled by the Republican Party, as it has been for 28 of the past 30 years (only 2009-2010 are exceptions). Members of the Assembly are elected to two-year terms during the fall elections. In the event of a vacancy in an Assembly seat between elections, a special election may be held to fill the position. The Wisconsin Constitution limits the size of the State Assembly to between 54 and 100 members inclusive. 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment
The 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It spent most of the war as a member of the famous Iron Brigade of the Army of the Potomac. It suffered the largest number of casualties as a percentage of its total enlistment of any Union Army unit in the war. Establishment Following the Battle of Fort Sumter, on April 16, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation to call for 75,000 volunteers to put down the rebellion. Pursuant to that proclamation, the War Department requested each state provide a certain number of regiments of volunteers—they requested one regiment from the state of Wisconsin.
