Daniel Harvey Hill Jr.
Daniel Harvey Hill Jr. (15 January 1859 – 31 July 1924) was an American librarian, educator, and the third chancellor of North Carolina State University. D. H. Hill Jr. Library on NCSU's campus is named in his honor. Early life Hill was born on 15 January 1859 in Davidson, NC to Confederate General Daniel Harvey Hill. After attending North Carolina Military Academy and Horner and Graves Military Academy, Hill Jr. received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Davidson College in 1880 and 1886, respectively. Career Hill began working as a professor of English and bookkeeping at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, now North Carolina State University, in 1889. Davidson is a suburban town in Mecklenburg, Iredell, and Cabarrus counties, North Carolina, United States. It is a suburb in the Charlotte metropolitan area. The population was 15,106 at the 2020 census, up from 10,944 in 2010. The town was founded in 1837 with the establishment of the Presbyterian Davidson College, named for Brigadier General William Lee Davidson, a local Revolutionary War hero. The land for Davidson College came from Davidson's estate, a large portion of which was donated by his son. Daniel Harvey Hill
Daniel Harvey Hill (July 12, 1821 – September 24, 1889), commonly known as D. H. Hill, was a Confederate general who commanded infantry in the eastern and western theaters of the American Civil War. Hill was known as an aggressive leader, being severely strict, deeply religious, and having dry, sarcastic humor. He was brother-in-law to Stonewall Jackson and a close friend to both James Longstreet and Joseph E. Johnston, but disagreements with both Robert E. Lee and Braxton Bragg cost him favor with Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Although his military ability was well respected, Hill was underused by the end of the American Civil War because of these political feuds. North Carolina Polytechnic Academy
North Carolina Polytechnic Academy, founded as Hillsborough Military Academy and also known as North Carolina Military Academy, was a school in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Col. Charles C. Tew CSA founded Hillsborough Military Academy. He was later killed in action at Battle of Antietam in 1862 on the eve of his promotion to brigadier general. Architect John A. Kay designed the Hillsborough Military Academy barracks building and commandant's house. Edmund Strudwick was the doctor for the Hillsborough Military Academy in the 1860s and cared for soldiers wounded in the Civil War at his home nearby. The commandant's house is a two-story, roughly square, castellated brick building in the Gothic Revival style. It is three bays wide and three bays deep and has rectangular turrets at each corner. Horner Military Academy
Horner Military School was a private educational institution in North Carolina that operated from 1851 until 1920. It was founded by James Hunter Horner in 1851 in Oxford, North Carolina as The Horner School. An 1844 graduate of the University of North Carolina, Horner had previously taught at Hillsborough Academy and the Oxford Male Academy. Located on "Horner Hill", the school was run by Horner with assistance at various times from his wife Sophronia Moore Horner, his brother Thomas J. Horner, his sons Jerome Channing Horner and Junius Horner, Junius Moore Horner, and others.
