Daniel Du Plessis
Daniel du Plessis is a South African para-athlete from Pretoria, Gauteng where he competes for the IS Ability Sports Club. He is the current African record holder over 400m at 52.41 seconds in the T62 (classification), T62 class. Du Plessis has limb deficiency in both legs due to fibular hemimelia which resulted in both legs being amputated below the knee. He uses prosthetic running blades. He is due to make his Paralympic debut at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. Du Plessis has a degree in actuarial science from Stellenbosch University and works in the financial sector. Daniël Michael du Plessis (born 17 March 1995) is a South African rugby union player for the in Super Rugby. His regular position is centre. Career Youth Du Plessis' first provincial selection came in 2013, when he was selected to represent Western Province at the Under-18 Craven Week tournament held in Polokwane. He started in their first match against the Pumas and ran in four tries in a 40–24 victory. He also played against the Blue Bulls and in the unofficial final against the Golden Lions, where he scored another try to secure victory for Western Province. At the conclusion of the tournament, he was also named in a South African Schools squad and he represented them in matches against England and France. Fibular Hemimelia
Fibular hemimelia or longitudinal fibular deficiency is "the Birth defect, congenital absence of the fibula and it is the most common congenital absence of long bone of the extremities." It is the shortening of the fibula at birth, or the complete lack thereof. Fibular hemimelia often causes severe knee instability due to deficiencies of the ligaments. Severe forms of fibula hemimelia can result in a malformed ankle with limited motion and stability. Syndactyly, Fusion or absence of two or more toes are also common. In humans, the disorder can be noted by ultrasound in utero to prepare for amputation after birth or complex bone-lengthening surgery. The amputation usually occurs at six months with removal of portions of the legs to prepare them for prosthetic use.
