Dandhy Laksono
Dandhy Dwi Laksono (born 29 June 1976) is an Indonesian activist, investigative journalist, and filmmaker. He is known for the 2019 documentary film ''Sexy Killers'', released prior to the 2019 Indonesian general election, which documented the collusion between the political establishment and the coal mining industry which is responsible for the environmental destruction. Dandhy was arrested in September 2019 for making tweets about violence by the state apparatus in the Western New Guinea, Indonesian Papua. The arrest was heavily criticized by the human rights groups. Biography Dandhy was born in Lumajang Regency, East Java. Dandhy is the founder of documentary production studio Watch Doc. ''Sexy Killers'' is a 2019 Indonesian documentary film directed by Dandhy Laksono, Dandhy Dwi Laksono and Ucok Suparta about the coal mining industry and its relations with the Indonesian political establishment. The film is a final piece to Laksono's 12-part documentary series ''Ekspedisi Indonesia Biru'' (Blue Indonesia Expedition) which aims to assess economic development and its environmental impact in Indonesia. The producer was Didit Haryo Wicaksono and the film was released by the independent film studio WatchDoc. The film was released on 14 April 2019 ahead of the 2019 Indonesian general election. 2019 Papua Protests
The 2019 Papua protests were a series of protests by Papuans in Indonesia that began on 19 August 2019 and mainly took place across Indonesian Papua region in response to the arrests of 43 Papuan students in Surabaya, East Java for alleged disrespect of the Indonesian flag. Many of the protests involved thousands of participants, and some grew from local protests in Surabaya to demanding an independence referendum for the whole region. In several locations, the protests turned into general riots, resulting in the destruction of government buildings in Wamena, Sorong and Jayapura. Clashes between protesters and police resulted in injuries, with over 30 people killed from both the clashes and the rioting.
