Dan Callikan
Dhananjay Calikan (22 April 1947 – 8 April 2023) was a Mauritian politician, political adviser and author. Early life, education, media career & family Dan Callikan grew up in the village of Mahebourg which is located in the district of Grand Port District in the south of Mauritius. He attended the secondary school Royal College Port Louis and was then awarded a scholarship to study in France although he had also secured a scholarship to study in the UK as a "laureate" of the Higher School Certificate. When he returned to Mauritius he worked as a journalist for the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC). Dan Callikan was married to Brigitte Masson who is sociologist, former activist, author, and daughter of Hervé Masson. Grand Port District
Grand Port () is a district of Mauritius, situated in the east of the island. The name means "large port" in French. The district has an area of 260.3 km2 and the estimated population was 112,997, as of 31 December 2015. History Grand Port is named after the village of 'Old Grand Port' which saw the first Dutch landing and the first port of the island. It is centered on the town of Mahébourg on the coast, inside the Grand Port Bay. Built by the Dutch and later taken over by the French, the town is a reminder of the colonial past of the island. The Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) is the national state broadcaster of the Republic of Mauritius, that is the islands of Mauritius, Rodrigues, and Agaléga. The Mouvement Militant Mauricien Socialiste Progressiste (MMMSP) was a political party in Mauritius. History MMMSP was founded by a splinter group led by linguist, playwright and politician Dev Virahsawmy on 23 March 1973 soon after the dissidents had left the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM). The split from the MMM occurred shortly after the release from jail of MMM leaders and other trade unionists on 23 December 1972 during the state of emergency. Anerood Jugnauth
Sir Anerood Jugnauth, GCSK, (29 March 1930 – 3 June 2021) was a Mauritian statesman, politician and barrister who served both as President and Prime Minister of Mauritius. He was Member of Parliament for Piton & Riviere Du Rempart. The central figure of Mauritian politics in the 1980s and early 1990s, he was Leader of the Opposition from 1976 to 1982. He served four consecutive terms as prime minister from 1982 to 1995 and again from 2000 to 2003. He was then elected as President from 2003 to 2012. 1995 Mauritian General Election
General elections were held in Mauritius on 20 December 1995. The result was a landslide victory for the Labour Party (Mauritius), Labour Party-Mauritian Militant Movement alliance led by Navin Ramgoolam, which won all 60 constituency seats on Mauritius. Along with 1982 Mauritian general election, 1982, it was one of three elections in which a party won every seat. The Militant Socialist Movement (MSM) led by Anerood Jugnauth lost power after 13 years, with Jugnauth resigning two days after the results were announced. Militant Socialist Movement
The Militant Socialist Movement (, MSM) is a centre-left political party in Mauritius. It was the single largest political party in the National Assembly of Mauritius, having won 42 of the 69 seats in the 2019 general elections; however, following the 2024 election, it only possesses one seat. It also holds the largest number of seats in all city/town councils through the country with 60 councillors out of 120. The party tends to be more popular amongst Indo-Mauritians.
