Dallas Divide
Dallas Divide (el. ) is a high mountain pass in the United States state of Colorado located on State Highway 62 about west of the town of Ridgway. The pass is a saddle between the San Juan Mountains to the south and the Uncompahgre Plateau to the north and divides the Uncompahgre River watershed from the San Miguel River watershed and Ouray County from San Miguel County. The pass takes its name from Dallas Creek which drains the basin on the north side of Mount Sneffels into the Uncompahgre River. The divide's namesake is George M. Dallas, 11th Vice President of the United States. A toll road was first constructed over Dallas Divide in 1880 linking the town of Dallas near Ridgway with Telluride. In 1890 the Rio Grande Southern Railroad was built over the divide from Ridgway to Telluride. State Highway 62 (SH 62) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Colorado. SH 62's western terminus is at SH 145 in Placerville, and the eastern terminus is at U.S. Route 550 (US 550) in Ridgway. Route description SH 62 starts at a junction with SH 145 just north of Placerville, Colorado in the San Miguel River valley and heads northeast up the Leopard Creek Canyon. The highway bends slowly to the east before crossing the Dallas Divide at an elevation of . It then follows Cottonwood and Dallas creeks downstream to Ridgway, Colorado. The highway crosses the Uncompahgre River just before ending at a junction with US 550. San Juan Skyway National Scenic Byway
The San Juan Skyway Scenic and Historic Byway is a All-American Road, National Forest Scenic Byway, and Colorado Scenic and Historic Byway located in Dolores, La Plata, Montezuma, San Juan, and San Miguel counties, Colorado, USA. The byway forms a loop in southwestern Colorado traversing the heart of the San Juan Mountains. The San Juan Skyway reaches its zenith at Red Mountain Pass at elevation . Mesa Verde National Park was one of the original UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Silverton Historic District and the Telluride Historic District are National Historic Landmarks. Rio Grande Southern Railroad
The Rio Grande Southern Railroad ( reporting mark RGS, also referred to as "The Southern") was a 3 ft (914 mm) narrow-gauge railroad which ran in the southwestern region of the US state of Colorado, from the towns of Durango to Ridgway, routed via Lizard Head Pass. Built by Russian immigrant and Colorado toll road builder Otto Mears, the RGS operated from 1891 through 1951 and was built with the intent to transport immense amounts of silver mineral traffic that were being produced by the mining communities of Rico and Telluride. On both ends of the railroad, there were interchanges with The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad (reporting mark D&RG(W), later known as the Denver and Rio Grande Western), which would ship the traffic the RGS hauled elsewhere like the San Juan Smelter in Durango. Telluride, Colorado
Telluride is the county seat and most populous town of San Miguel County in the southwestern portion of the U.S. state of Colorado. The town is a former silver mining camp on the San Miguel River in the western San Juan Mountains. The first gold mining claim was made in the mountains above Telluride in 1875, and early settlement of what is now Telluride followed. The town was founded in 1878 as "Columbia", but due to confusion with a California town of the same name, was renamed Telluride in 1887 for the gold telluride minerals found in other parts of Colorado. These telluride minerals were never found near Telluride, but the area's mines for some years provided zinc, lead, copper, silver, and other gold ores. Telluride sits in a box canyon. Dallas, Colorado
Dallas is an extinct town in Ouray County, Colorado, United States. Also known as Dallas City, it lay about north of the present town of Ridgway at the confluence of Dallas Creek and the Uncompahgre River. The Dallas post office operated from February 11, 1884, until October 31 1899. A community named in tribute to the historic town bearing the name Dallas Meadows now exists near its historic location. History Dallas was founded in 1880 and named after the former Vice President of the United States, George M. Dallas, and was a stagecoach stop on a toll road which linked Montrose with Ouray. The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad reached Dallas in 1887 and Dallas was incorporated on 2 April 1889. The new town of Ridgway was founded a year later in 1890 and became the prominent town as Dallas slowly disappeared.
