Daily Colonist
The ''Times Colonist'' is an English-language daily newspaper in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. It was formed by the September 2, 1980 merger of the ''Victoria Daily Times'', established in 1884, and the ''British Colonist'' (later the ''Daily Colonist''), established in 1858 by Amor De Cosmos who was later British Columbia's second Premier. The ''British Colonist'' was B.C.'s first paper "of any permanence". De Cosmos was the editor until 1866 when D.W. Higgins took over—he would remain in the role for the next twenty years. Local news receives the greatest prominence in the ''Times Colonist''. Stories and photographs about Greater Victoria are often featured on the front page. The newspaper also has national and international stories, plus sections covering the arts, sports, and business. Samuel Thompson (newspaper Editor)
Samuel Thompson (August 27, 1810 – July 8, 1886) was a Canadian businessman and newspaper editor. Early years Samuel Thompson was born in London, England on August 27, 1810. He completed an apprenticeship with a printer, then went to Upper Canada in 1833 with his two brothers and settled on farms there. In 1837, he went to Toronto in search of work. He joined the city guards during the Upper Canada Rebellion. Career He managed a newspaper for Charles Fothergill and then became a partner with booksellers William and Henry Rowsell, managing their printing operation. In 1848, he became editor for the ''Toronto Patriot'', owned by Edward George O'Brien. In 1849, with Ogle Robert Gowan, he took over the operation of the paper. They also published the ''United Empire''. The ''Alberni Valley News'' is a weekly newspaper in Port Alberni, on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. It publishes Wednesday and is owned by Black Press. History The ''News'' was part of David Radler's Sterling Newspapers chain in the 1970s, and became part of the Southam chain when Radler and Conrad Black incorporated Southam into Hollinger Inc.; this chain was, at the time, the dominant newspaper publisher in British Columbia, and also included the ''Nanaimo Daily News'', ''Times Colonist'' and several weeklies. Along with the rest of Southam, ownership of the Vancouver Island newspapers passed to Canwest in 2000, then Postmedia Network in 2010. Print circulation is the average number of copies of a publication. The number of copies of a non-periodical publication (such as a book) are usually called print run. Victoria West, commonly called Vic West, is a historic neighbourhood of the city of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, located just west of downtown across Victoria Harbour, bordering on the Township of Esquimalt. When the Hudson's Bay Company arrived in Victoria in 1842 to establish Fort Victoria, the neighbourhood now known as Victoria West was the site of a village of the Songhees, the aboriginal people of the Victoria area. Ladysmith, originally Oyster Harbour, is a town located on the 49th parallel north on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The ''Nanaimo Daily News'' was a Canadian daily newspaper published weekdays in Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island in British Columbia for 141 years until ceasing publication in January 2016. The paper's final owner was Black Press, which also publishes the ''Alberni Valley Times'' and the ''Ladysmith-Chemainus Chronicle'', and several other weekly newspapers on the island.
