DW Norris
D.W. (Fritz) Norris (February 2, 1876 – October 5, 1949), aka David Windsor “Fritz” Norris Jr. was an American newspaper publisher and businessman. Early life He was born in Chicago, Ill. He graduated from Grinnell College in 1892. Career He began to sell advertising in 1897 in Marshalltown, Iowa for the Marshalltown Times Republican and in 1899, purchased the paper and became editor and publisher. In 1904 he purchased a furnace business from Dave Lennox for $54,789 that was based on a novel patented furnace design using riveted steel, incorporated the operation as "Lennox Furnace Company" and proceeded to sell 600 furnaces in the first year. Marshalltown, Iowa
Marshalltown is a city in and the county seat of Marshall County, Iowa, United States, located along the Iowa River. It is the seat and most populous settlement of Marshall County and the 16th largest city in Iowa, with a population of 27,591 at the 2020 census. Marshalltown is home to the Iowa Veterans Home and Marshalltown Community College. History Henry Anson was the first European settler in what is now called Marshalltown. Dave Lennox
David Lennox (April 15, 1855 – February 15, 1947) was an American inventor and businessman. A furnace manufacturing business he founded in 1895 in Marshalltown, Iowa evolved into what is today known as Lennox International, a global corporation specializing in air conditioning, heating, and commercial refrigeration. Lennox helped to develop what has been described as the first riveted-steel furnace in 1895. His contributions to furnace design have been described as significant steps forward in durability and efficiency from the cast iron furnaces commonly in use near the end of the 19th century. The company is based outside Dallas, Texas in the United States and has operations globally. History The company was founded in 1895, in Marshalltown, Iowa, by Dave Lennox, the owner of a machine repair business for railroads. Inventors Ezra William Smith and Ernest Bryant brought their idea for a riveted steel coal-fired furnace to his machine shop to build parts for a prototype.
