''DSVII'' (short for ''Digital Shades Vol. II'') is the eighth studio album by French electronic music band M83, released on 20 September 2019 through Naïve and Mute Records. It is a sequel album to '' Digital Shades Vol. 1'', released in 2007. Background Anthony Gonzalez said the album was inspired by playing 1980s video games while in Cap d'Antibes in France in 2017, calling the "old-school games" "naive and touching" as well as "simple and imperfect". He was also inspired by the soundtracks of science fiction and fantasy films of the decade, as well as the synthesizer music of Suzanne Ciani, Mort Garson, Brian Eno and John Carpenter. Recording Gonzalez recorded the album between 2017 and 2018 using only analog equipment, splitting sessions between both his Los Angeles studio and producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen's studio in Glendale, California. M83 () is a French electronic rock group formed in Antibes in 1999. Initially the duo of multi-instrumentalists Nicolas Fromageau and Anthony Gonzalez, Fromageau parted ways shortly after touring for their second album ''Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts''. Gonzalez remains the sole constant member of the project, as the primary songwriter and lead vocalist. The band has released nine studio albums, including the Grammy Awards, Grammy Award-nominated ''Hurry Up, We're Dreaming'', in addition to two soundtracks. Justin Meldal-Johnsen (born March 26, 1970) is an American record producer, musician, songwriter and musical director. He is best known for his work with artists such as Beck, Nine Inch Nails, M83, Air, St. Vincent, Wolf Alice, and Deafheaven. Meldal-Johnsen served as the touring bassist, guitarist, and keyboardist for Nine Inch Nails in 2008 and 2009, and was Beck's bassist and musical director from 1996 until mid-2016. In 2021, he began work as a bassist, keyboardist and musical director for St. Vincent, and in 2023 resumed occasional touring with Beck. ''Fantasy'' is the ninth studio album by French band M83, released on 17 March 2023 through Virgin Records France and Mute Records. It was announced on 10 January 2023 alongside the release of the lead single "Oceans Niagara". The band toured North America and Europe in support of the album from April to August 2023. Background and recording Gonzalez worked on the album throughout 2021 with longtime bandmate Joe Berry and producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen, explaining that he wanted a "band feel" and to "make music in a room with musicians and jam around and see what happened", which made "enough material to turn all these jams into an album". Morton Sanford Garson (20 July 1924 – 4 January 2008) was a Canadian composer, arranger, songwriter, and pioneer of electronic music. He is best known for his albums in the 1960s and 1970s, such as '' Mother Earth's Plantasia'' (1976). Analog recording is a category of techniques used for the recording of analog signals. This enables later playback of the recorded analog audio. Analog audio recording began with mechanical systems such as the phonautograph and phonograph.
