DIY Space For London
DIY Space for London was a volunteer-run social centre, music venue, rehearsal space, and creative hub formerly located at 96-108 Ormside Street in South Bermondsey, London. History The space opened in September 2015 after the founding collective at first struggled for two years to find a suitable location. The collective, started in 2012, raised £20,000 through benefit gigs, events, and community grants to secure a five year lease. Inspired by other social centres such as 1 in 12 Club in Bradford, their goal was to, "create a sustainable, collectively run space to put gigs on, hold meetings and building a communal infrastructure" that would be "run by its members and open for anyone to get involved in." Punk Rock
Punk rock (also known as simply punk) is a rock music genre that emerged in the mid-1970s. Rooted in 1950s rock and roll and 1960s garage rock, punk bands rejected the corporate nature of mainstream 1970s rock music. They typically produced short, fast-paced songs with hard-edged melodies and singing styles with stripped-down instrumentation. Queercore
Queercore (or homocore) is a cultural/social movement that began in the mid-1980s as an offshoot of the punk subculture and a music genre that comes from punk rock. It is distinguished by its discontent with society in general, and specifically society's disapproval of the LGBTQ community. Queercore expresses itself in a DIY style through magazines, music, writing and film. As a music genre, it may be distinguished by lyrics exploring themes of prejudice and dealing with issues such as sexual identity, gender identity and the rights of the individual; more generally, queercore bands offer a critique of society endemic to their position within it, sometimes in a light-hearted way, sometimes seriously. Power Lunches
Power Lunches Arts Café was a music venue, rehearsal space, and creative hub located on Kingsland Road in Dalston, a district of the London Borough of Hackney. History The café opened in 2011 and closed in 2015. It started out with gigs planned to be only at weekends, but later became a prominent feature of Hackney's DIY music scene with gigs most nights every week. Though originally genuinely also a café, it eventually stopped serving food. The café hosted performances in its basement, the absolute maximum capacity of both floors was 150. These were most often concerts by local bands, but also saw acts from elsewhere in the UK, as well as further afield. The term "person of color" (: people of color or persons of color; abbreviated POC) is used to describe any person who is not considered "white". Decolonise Fest
Decolonise Fest is the UK's first music festival created by and for people of colour. The first event happened at DIY Space for London in 2017. Background In 2016 a collective named DIY Diaspora Punx was formed. It was assembled by Stephanie Phillips of Big Joanie, inspired by Chicago's Black and Brown Punk Fest. The collective also contained other London musicians such as Ray Aggs. Over the weekend of 2 - 4 June 2017 the first Decolonise Fest was held at DIY Space for London with international bands, consisting of live music, workshops and panels. Panels at the festival have included intergenerational musicians such as Miki Berenyi. Two more festivals followed in 2018 and 2019, before the Covid-19 Pandemic forced the cancellation of the one planned for 2020, and ultimately the closure of DIY Space For London. Ray Aggs
Ray Aggs is a musician based in Glasgow. Primarily known for their distinctive guitar work, influenced by both West African highlife and post-punk, they also sing and play the violin. Career They have been playing with the band Trash Kit since 2009, formed with Rachel Horwood and Ros Murray (later replaced by Gill Partington), releasing 3 albums on the Upset! The Rhythm Indie-label, a self-titled record in 2010, ''Confidence'', in 2014 and ''Horizon'' in 2019. Aggs is also a member of Shopping, formed with Andrew Milk and Billy Easter, since 2012. Big Joanie is a British punk band formed in London in 2013. Its members are Stephanie Phillips (guitar and vocals) and Estella Adeyeri (bass guitar and vocals). Founding drummer Chardine Taylor-Stone left the band in 2023. After a few singles and EPs they released their first album in 2018 with Thurston Moore and Eva Prinz's Daydream Library Series, and have since signed to Kill Rock Stars in the U.S. History Formation and early releases Big Joanie was formed by Stephanie Phillips in 2013, who posted online asking for bandmates with whom to start a black feminist punk band after becoming frustrated with the lack of intersectionality in the scene.
