DF40D3
The DF4 () is a type of diesel–electric locomotive used in the People's Republic of China. It has been in production since 1969 and is still produced as of 2007 by several local companies. It is the most common locomotive in China and is used for both passenger and freight services. Models DF4 The first DF4 was built in 1969 in Dalian. The first 108 locomotives that were built here are the original DF4s using the 16V240ZJ engine. It took seven years to build all 108 locomotives of this type. Due to unstable technique in the production of early-built DF4 locomotives, malfunctions of mechanic and electric parts occurred frequently during the operation, especially the diesel engine. Thus, most DF4 locomotives were taken out of service for maintenance, and railroad engineers from Fengtai Locomotive Depot sarcastically joked that the DF4 "can't make it from Dongdan to Xisi", two neighborhoods of Beijing. Therefore, Dalian Locomotive Works introduced 16V240ZJA, an improved diesel e ...

Comfort Cab
A comfort cab is a design found on most modern North American diesel locomotives, and some export models. The broad nose occupies the entire width of the locomotive, and typically has an access door on the front of the nose. The design may also be called a ''Canadian comfort cab'', a ''North American safety cab'', ''wide-nose'', or a ''wide cab'' (although the term ''wide cab'' is somewhat of a misnomer because it is the nose, not the cab, that is widened). History The basic shape of the comfort cab design first appeared on a hood unit, the EMD DDA40X, in 1969. It was the same design as the F45 and FP45 cowl units being built by EMD at the time. The cab used on the DDA40X was not a true "Safety cab" because it consisted mainly of restyled sheet metal and lacked the structural reinforcements of the Canadian design. The first true "Safety cabs" were designed and built for the Canadian National Railway by input from railway employees. The locomotives were GP38-2s, GP40-2s ...

Road Switcher Locomotive
A road switcher locomotive is a type of railroad locomotive designed to both haul railcars in mainline service and shunt them in railroad yards. Both type and term are North American in origin, although similar types have been used elsewhere. A road switcher must be able to operate and have good visibility in both directions. As a road engine, a road switcher must be able to operate at road speeds, with suitable power and cooling capacity. It has high-speed road trucks rather than low-speed switcher only trucks. Modern road trucks are always equipped with "frictionless" roller bearings, whereas switcher trucks were almost always equipped with "friction" plain bearings, until plain bearings were outlawed in interchange service on both railcars and locomotives. Overview For the reasons given above, road switchers are generally hood units. The set-back cab of a hood unit provides more safety in the event of a collision at speed than most switcher locomotive designs, and the ...
