Data Encryption Standard
The Data Encryption Standard (DES ) is a symmetric-key algorithm for the encryption of digital data. Although its short key length of 56 bits makes it too insecure for modern applications, it has been highly influential in the advancement of cryptography. Developed in the early 1970s at IBM and based on an earlier design by Horst Feistel, the algorithm was submitted to the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) following the agency's invitation to propose a candidate for the protection of sensitive, unclassified electronic government data. In 1976, after consultation with the National Security Agency (NSA), the NBS selected a slightly modified version (strengthened against differential cryptanalysis, but weakened against brute-force attacks), which was published as an official Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) for the United States in 1977. The publication of an NSA-approved encryption standard led to its quick international adoption and widespread academic scrutiny. C ...

Deep Ecliptic Survey
The Deep Ecliptic Survey (DES) is a project to find Kuiper belt objects (KBOs), using the facilities of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO). The principal investigator is Robert L. Millis. Since 1998 through the end of 2003, the survey covered 550 square degrees with sensitivity of 22.5, which means an estimated 50% of objects of this magnitude have been found. The survey has also established the mean Kuiper Belt plane and introduced new formal definitions of the dynamical classes of Kuiper belt objects. The remarkable first observations and/or discoveries include: * 28978 Ixion, large plutino * 19521 Chaos (cubewano) * , the first binary trans-Neptunian object (TNO) * , the first object with perihelion too far to be affected (scattered) by Neptune and a large semi-major axis * , remarkable for its semi-major axis of more than 500 AU and extreme eccentricity (0.96) taking the object from the inside of the Neptune's orbit to more than 1000 AU * , the first Ne ...

Diethyl Sulfate
Diethyl sulfate (DES) is an organosulfur compound with the formula (C2H5)2SO4. It occurs as a colorless, oily liquid with a faint peppermint odor. It is toxic, combustible, and likely carcinogenic chemical compound. Diethyl sulfate is used as an ethylating agent. Structure and properties Although the formula for diethyl sulfate is typically written (C2H5)2SO4, a more descriptive formula would be (C2H5O)2SO2. It is a diester of sulfuric acid. Sulfur is tetrahedral. Diethyl sulfate hydrolyzes readily, forming ethanol and ethyl sulfate. Eventually sulfuric acid is formed with excess water. Reactions Diethyl sulfate is used to an alkylating agent to prepare ethyl ethers, ethyl amines and ammonium salts, and ethyl thioethers. In preparing ethyl esters of fatty acids, both equivalents of the ethyl electrophile are transferred, unlike the usual alkylation of phenoxides: : Both dimethyl sulfate and diethyl sulfate react with inorganic nucleophiles as well. For example, potassi ...

Desmond (name)
Desmond is a given name and a surname, derived from the Irish place-name ''Desmond'', an anglicization of the Irish ''Deas-Mhumhna'' ("South Munster"). The Irish peerages of Ormonde, Desmond, and Thomond represented the old sub-kingdoms of East, South, and North Munster, respectively.Isaac Taylor, ''Names and their histories, alphabetically arranged as a handbook of historical geography and topographical nomenclature'' (1896), p. 199. South Munster existed as an independent territory between 1118 and 1543. The title of Earl of Desmond (fourth creation) in the Peerage of Ireland originates in 1628; it is currently held by Alexander Feilding, 12th Earl of Denbigh (born 1970). Notable people with the given name *Desmond Amofah (1990–2019), American YouTuber better known as Etika * Desmond Arthur (1884–1913), Irish Lieutenant in the No. 2 Squadron RAF, known for being the Montrose Ghost * Desmond Claude (born 2003), American basketball player *Desmond Connell (1926–20 ...

Detached Eddy Simulation
Detached eddy simulation (DES) is a modification of a Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations (RANS) model in which the model switches to a subgrid scale formulation in regions fine enough for large eddy simulation (LES) calculations. Details Regions near solid boundaries and where the turbulent length scale is less than the maximum grid dimension are assigned the RANS mode of solution. As the turbulent length scale exceeds the grid dimension, the regions are solved using the LES mode. Therefore, the grid resolution is not as demanding as pure LES, thereby considerably cutting down the cost of the computation. Though DES was initially formulated for the Spalart-Allmaras model, it can be implemented with other RANS models (Strelets, 2001), by appropriately modifying the length scale which is explicitly or implicitly involved in the RANS model. So while Spalart-Allmaras model based DES acts as LES with a wall model, DES based on other models (like two equation models) behave a ...

Delivered Ex Ship
The Incoterms or International Commercial Terms are a series of pre-defined commercial terms published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) relating to international commercial law. Incoterms define the responsibilities of exporters and importers in the arrangement of shipments and the transfer of liability involved at various stages of the transaction. They are widely used in international commercial transactions or procurement processes and their use is encouraged by trade councils, courts and international lawyers. A series of three-letter trade terms related to common contractual sales practices, the Incoterms rules are intended primarily to clearly communicate the tasks, costs, and risks associated with the global or international transportation and delivery of goods. Incoterms inform sales contracts defining respective obligations, costs, and risks involved in the delivery of goods from the seller to the buyer, but they do not themselves conclude a contract, determ ...

It began operating on 2 April 2007, following the merger of the MoD's Defence Procurement Agency and the Defence Logistics Organisation, under the Chief Executive Officer of Defence Equipment and Support. In 2022, the DE&S workforce was around 11,500 with the majority based at MoD Abbey Wood in Bristol. History Defence Equipment and Support was established on 2 April 2007 with General Sir Kevin O'Donoghue as its first CEO. Responsibility for 'Logistics, Commodities and Services' (including storage and delivery of non-weaponry equipment, such as food and clothing, to soldiers) was contracted out to the private sector in 2015 under an arrangement that included the transfer of 1,100 staff and construction of a new Defence Fulfilment Centre at MoD Donnington. In September 2022, Andy Start was appointed CEO of the organisation, joining from an executiv ...
